They are right. Too many dumb costumers buy film era flashes that will fry the camera circuit due to high voltage.

By removing this center pin, they remove any chance of this happening.

they're also not the first, as Minolta film shooters know. they introduced their very own proprietary hot shoe in the early 90's and it carried on into the Sony days

I think you seriously misunderstand who the average canon consumer-level camera buyer is. It's not some /p/-fag starting out in photography, upgrading as he gets better. It's a 40-something boomer who thinks that getting a DSLR will magically give him better photos put keeps it in auto mode forever.
