First macro attempt - soap bubbles

I bought an old DSRL on Ebay. I am interested in shooting weird shit like bugs and stuff but I didn't have any bugs at home so I started shooting soap bubbles. For these shots I used a cheap macro setup, a reversed lens with an extension tube.

Its a close-up of a soap bubble. I dip a glass in a soap solution which produces a thin film covering the opening of the glass. Then I point a lamp at the film and do some macro. To be honest I'm not quite sure what I'm doing yet but I like the results.

I think its due to spherical aberration because of the high magnification, depth of field and curvature of the film. Cropping them to cover only in focus areas works fine.

If it is too magnified you may need to take a photo of something else that has a known width then calculate. Otherwise, around 20-35:1 it can get a bit difficult to use a ruler, depending on the ruler of course.

Sure, here you go. The default mode is to have the bands, but if I create a slight breeze by blowing at the soap film all the layers start intermixing and you get the pattern you want.

Not at all. The only thing I've adjusted are the levels. It actually starts looking way too artificial if I touch the contrast, saturation etc and I wanted to keep it as close as possible to what I see through the viewfinder .

Fascinating. The color is phenomenal. You should look into making some large format prints, I think these would look great poster sized.

Also, if you want to open the floor to abstract work in general, I'd be happy to post some of mine. I've been considering starting an abstract thread for awhile.

Here's one. This is a close up crop from a much larger piece, which is 12000x8000 pixels. I'm planning to print them super large format, which makes the resolution ideal.

I basically took two different images of trees, layered them over each other several times, and used blending modes in Photoshop to provide the effect. Then, I mirrored them around. I have a whole series of roughly 60 pieces like this so far. It's an ongoing project.

Excellent. I am happy that people want to post their abstract stuff in my thread. With that in mind I post an image I took several years ago, its paracetamol crystals under the microscope shot with polarized light (also giving rise to interference colors).

Its very crude and as you can see I would greatly benefit from a tripod and dedicated lighting. Nonetheless it still worked ok. The camera (Canon 50D) is connected to a reversed lens (Nikon Micro-Nikkor 50 mm f/2.8) via an extension tube. The light is shining onto a thin soap film covering the glass opening. You simply dip the glass in a soap solution (you might want to experiment here with different soaps, shampoos, shower gels etc). You have a limited time before the film pops and you have to repeat the dipping.

Not much really, I am still learning the basics of photography but I love to experiment. I only posted here and on one other forum but its not getting much attention. I will try a new experiment in the coming days and post the results here.
