Full Frame Portrait Lens

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens looks pretty affordable I think, but does it make sense to use this with a full frame sensor? Am I wasting money on full frame if I use it with this lens?

Can you suggest a camera/portrait lens combination for less than $1,000 used?

yes. you're on the right track. the 85 1.8 will create fine portraits on the 6d. but for hot chicks you're gonna want as much in focus as possible. The wide apertures aren't really that useful for sexy glamour pics as all the good bits get blurred when shooting at wide apertures. I would suggest a standard zoom in the 24-105 range. you can pic up an old 28-135 + 6D for < 1K on ebay and have money left over for a speedlight or two. which would server you better than a wide aperture portrait lens for you needs. personally i find zooms and speedlights a much greater asset for this style than wide apertures. Hot chick never stand still so the zoom becomes invaluable when framing them up. and honestly no ones gonna be looking at your bokeh when theres a sexy girl in the frame

this pic looks like garbage and is probably not what im after. i don't understand the utility of using zoom for portraits, but im half retarded. why wouldn't i just crop in post production?

i was under the impression that the speedlight was for situations in which there just isn't a better option. like in a club, where the lighting is low and people are moving quickly. is there a situation where i would want to use it, given that i can convince the subject to hold still anyway?

Huh? No, speedlights are frequently used as a portable lighting setup because you can get them for like $300 each as opposed to battery powered strobes that are like $800 each minimum. They're not as strong, but a GN 60 speedlite is plenty for a whole bunch of shit.

if you're after pics like #1 then for sure go with the 85mm. It's shallow depth of field will create lovely portraits

Speedlight do indeed look like pic #2 if on camera and not diffused. If its not your thing then by all means go 85mm with a 6D. you will be very Happy with this combo. I have a 6D myself and i Love it. Pictures like #1 are very easy to accomplish
