Retard here. I'm looking for a new lens for taking pics of my gf, mostly outdoor. Price range is about $1k and i've been looking at the Sigma Art f/1.4s online. Which would be better for me, the 50mm or 85mm on a APS-C (Nikon d7500)?

Go with the 50, if you're using a crop censor. It's a fucking phenomenal lens for the price. The 85 is amazing, too, but it's xbox huge and would probably be tighter than you're looking for.

I'd rather go for the 85mm. Personal opinion. I use the 85mm sigma art and the 50mm as well, I feel that the 85mm feels good and the images are crisp. I honestly don't know why but the images from the 85 look damn pretty (considering the skill of the photographer is somewhat average or good).

I have been using the 50mm for a day now, the sharpness at f/1.4 is bad, but I think it might have been becouse I didn't focus properly on many of the images or was too far away. At higher stops its incredibly sharp. All in all I love this lens.

I think 50mm could be tight for a portrait on a crop depending on the type of environment you shoot in. I bought the 1.8 50 mm for my 7200 and although it's a nice lens it felt a bit restrictive. Recently picked up a Sigma 18-35 1.8 for around $550 USD and could not be happier.

I think 85 mm would be crazy tight on a crop sensor.

Sigma Art Primes are sharper than just about any other lens, even more than Canon and Nikon. Look at the charts published from lensrentals. That company is the only reliable third party lens tester -- fuck DXOMark. Anyways, the Sigma 85 1.4 is a fucking masterpiece. It's a money maker for portrait photographers.
