Light, Gesture and Color is by far my favourite photo book.

The Kodak one I picked up for 50p in a charity shop and it's great for the basics of photography. I only keep this to lend it to people who are interested in starting photography. It's from 1982 though so focuses on film.

What makes photography great takes famous photos and explains what's so good about them. Some great stuff in there.

Black and White Handbook I've not read yet. Got it the other day.

PHotos that changed the world is more of a history book than a photo book but it has some great striking images for inspiration.

Excuse the chewed up parts. Fucking rabbits.

well my books are just too good and are literal kino. also dont own too many because i recognized photo as a lesser art, lesser even than videogames and i hate games, so i started getting artbooks instead. anyways, i got:

-alexander gronsky norilsk
-that awesome one by moriyama with the train on the cover
-the twins on the cover monography by arbus
-charlie white monsters
-one on migrants that has tasty trix grain but ultimately very forgettable
-the polaroid book, cool to get chicks on the idea of being photographed topless
-the gray magnum meme book i forgot i had and that im def selling
-the blue one by franco fontana, good when on drugs, otherwise idk wanted to like it more
-bigass (normally theyre small with this author) old book on kertesz, of paris and new york, its good

"Photography" (skira publications) is a four-part series that covers photography from the 19th century til 2013. I'm reading part four (skipping the early history for now) and it's good;like "The Photograph as Contemporary Art" (which I liked a lot) but bigger and maybe more in depth. Has an interesting and simple structure; four "chapters" separated by an essay.

I just finished Okwui Enwezor's essay on photography and the archive, and while it was really informative, it took a lot of re-reading to get through because his language is (perhaps excessively) complicated for someone not already vastly familiar with art and art theory, like me.

My collection. Mostly cobbled from ebay sellers and local charity shops.

My favourites are:
East End by John Claridge. Moody B&W photography of grimy London.

Paris by Night by Brassai. Basically the Bible of low light photography. He timed his long exposures by the time it took him to smoke a cig, amazing stuff. It still amazes me what he accomplished considering most of /p/ can't work out how to take pleasing low light photography to this day.

Facing the World: Great Moments in Photojournalism. An absolute brick of a book but so underrated. Basically the most impressive and comprehensive book on photojournalism I've ever seen. I got mine cheap locally but it's worth full price for the quality of the prints and amount of content.

And Daido Moriyama's Record. It was the book that made me fall in love with photography and I still return to it often. The prints are so textured it looks like you can reach right into the grain, an effect you don't get looking at Daido's work on a phone or monitor.

Oops, removing the EXIF must have wiped the orientation.

The big red book is my newest find, it's a collection from the New Japanese Photography exhibit from years ago. Not a fan of the tiny prints but there's a lot of neat little known names in here.

You should look for the original editions of the Life photography series. The printing of the black and white photos is phenomenal. Much better than the revised editions.

It's a series of books from the 70s (?) that Life released. Covers many different aspects of photography. I believe it was in the 80s that they released revised editions of the series. The anon above me has three of them on his shelf (Color, Art of Photography, Great Themes).

The color one may be better in the revised edition, but the black and white printing is phenomenal in three originals.
