Imagine going back to when you first started taking pictures, to when you first started investing in photography equipment.
Knowing what you know now, about photography, equipment & gear, techniques and tricks of the craft, what would you invest in, or do differently?

Why would I need to do this? I'm already at a point where I'm happy with the photos I take. "Going back" and changing what I've already learnt won't help me in anyway. The only thing I guess I could say to myself is don't be a dirty gearfag and don't go for cheap shit that won't last

This is the only thing I can think of. Took me a while to learn the ‘buy cheap buy twice’ meme is 100% legit. Other than that, yeah I’ve made mistakes but if I hadn’t I wouldn’t have learned all the things I have. Making mistakes is an essential part of learning the craft.

I just started a year ago myself so I still don't know anything really

one thing I would change -- I shouldn't have listened to my best friend who was a beginner and told me to simply get a new nikon d5300, I should have listened to the random guy on the internet who told me to get a fuji x-t10/x-t20
because right now I want a mirrorless

Everything the same apart from not buying Fuji in 2017, although finding out how shit mirrorless is is a necessary experience, along with using the Contax G 90mm. Also I should have started with film earlier.

Yes, we learn from our mistakes, this is true regarding everything from Photography, & Welding, to Surgery to Auto Mechanics.
What you forgot though, is that we also learn from the mistakes of others. For example, for me personally, one of the many mistakes I made when I was first starting out, was thinking that buying cheap, was the smart way to go. I thought that if I saved a few bucks, then who was the wiser. I was wrong.
If I could go back and start over again, I would start from the beginning knowing that it's better to

Especially when it comes to glass and optical clarity. It's better to save, and get the more reliable version despite it being more expensive, rather than immediately buy the cheaper version, that you will likely have to buy all ov again anyway.

Plenty more but basically buy less gear but good gear to save money. I was good at listening to criticism and adapting from it but I see that a major problem most people suffer from- repeating the same shit over and over, particularly on 4chan

Time and knowledge. What I had way back then was what I could afford. But if I knew back then what I know now life could have been very different.

also the evf is nice to have

Get a Nikon full frame, don't sell the X-pro1/18mm. Get a Mamiya Super 23 with the 100mm F2.8 instead of the Fuji GW690. Don't buy a Sony A7 or Ricoh GR.

I would have gone full frame and got something with a shorter FFD. I'm on crop with a 46.5mm FFD right now. The Nikon Z-mount didn't exist back then, but I'd probably have got something like that. With a 16mm FFD I could do a shit load more than I can right now. Though, I really like OVF.

I actually built my very first serious system off pee recommendations when people were shilling the 5D Classic here pretty hard and I had no regrets but I shouldn't have fallen for the red ring meme.

Use Instagram less.
Only use semi-pro or pro bodies. Honestly the way a 7D changed the way I take photos.
Don't sell camera gear to address life problems. Figure something else out.
Bracket more. So many fucked exposure photos that could've been salvaged if I had either composited or just had more of a photo/data selection

When I first started shooting I went on a huge cross country road trip. I had been shooting for a while at that point (I had a Leica D-lux 6 for basically all of college) but this was my first DSLR so I was looking forward to really cutting my teeth.

Firstly, I would have coughed up the money for a better body right off the bad. I bought a D5600 dual lens kit when in reality I probably should have started with a 7200. Didn't quite have 750 money, but I was ok with that.

Also I shot that entire trip in JPEG and used afterlight for any of the pictures I actually decided to process. There are some really great shots that I will never be able to fully maximize because none of them were RAW.

Also when I started using lightroom I was wayyyy too trigger happy with the split toning. So many of my older shots look awful because I tried too hard with split toning.

I first got seriously interested in photography 21 years ago. I never did it full-time, but have had a few books published, have had my work in most of the major national papers, and won a couple significant awards. If I could do it all over again, by far the biggest thing I'd do differently is avoid gearfaggotry. It took probably fifteen years to buy all the shiny shit, then eventually come full circle and figure out I could have done almost everything I ever wanted to with my first camera. The one exception to that, and the one other thing I would change, is to learn large format earlier. I don't particularly like shooting LF and rarely do it anymore, but it forced me to really master thinking about exposure and composition.

That said, I don't know that it would matter. I've seen enough people get into photography and go through more or less the exact same process that I think it's something you just have to go through. You have to do the flowers, the macros, the meme of the week shit, buy all the gear, and agonize and argue about trivial specs again and again because you won't believe what people say until you've done it yourself. It doesn't help that most people lose interest before they get good enough to outgrow gearfagging, and the most prolific writers are gearfags because their autistic passion drives them, so most of what you read or see is decidedly from a gearfag perspective. But if you can avoid that line of thinking, you can save yourself a lot of money and frustration.
