hey guys,

i am going hiking 2-3 times a year and have always used my phone for pictures but would like to take a camera with me on the next trip.

do you guys have any recommendations for a small and light camera that is durable, has great battery life and takes good pictures?

Pentax or a micro 4/3 camera with acceptable weather sealing. M43 is light, excellent lens selection, generally affordable, the one I owned pulled off 500-700 shots before the battery died (and batteries are also conveniently small). On top of that, IBIS is common and the smaller sensor means the depth of field is more suitable for casual landscape shooting. Pentax just is the most rugged brand out there.

I have a Pentax K-3 like >>3485196 recommends. I mostly shoot wildlife/nature so I almost exclusively use it out hiking.
It's no compact Fuji but it's not huge or bulky and IQ is great. Can be found used for under 500 bucks, has in body stabilization, and if you go for the K-3 II it has pixel shift for greater detail in landscapes. Fully weather sealed, 2 SD card slots, and unless you shoot exclusively in live view with stabilization on and use the pop up flash, you're not going to run through the battery even over the course of a long weekend. The Limited primes are great, and you can pick up the 18-55 and 55-300mm kit lenses for like 300 combined, both of which are weather sealed as well.

It's not as common I find them and they move around a bit so tougher than most of my subjects that stay put.
Pic related is my setup, 100mm WR macro and cheap chinese flash (wish I had a more powerful flash) with diy diffusor setup

Also pic related is probably my all time favorite shot.
One shot, handheld, second weekend out with my new lens. Practicing manual focusing and missing focus on lots of shots but luckily hit focus when I was able to find the best composition.

How you store it (moisture/heat changes) and maintain it (clean dust/debris) matters more in outdoors than the camera itself. But if you're clumsy and prone to dropping and bumping into shit then a pentax I guess.

You're biggest challenge is high humidity areas where condensation gets inside the lens and camera body, which few brands will help with anyway.

Get a good solid backpack or bag that's weather resistant with a bunch of those clear plastic covers that can tie off over your lens and body.

If weights an issue you should really consider working out or just sticking with a point and shoot. The shitty thing about an interchangeable body is the big hole in the front that can fuck everything up, if your lens arent weathersealed shit can get in anyways.

Do research, YouTube is your friend.

But anyway OP Pentax is rugged as shit. Fuji and olympus are pretty compact, some fuji have weather sealing, some olympus has in body stabilization, most new pentax have both but they're larger. you'll want to see which systems have more weather sealed lenses as well.
Or you could just cop a used ricoh gr ii or similar point and shoot for a couple hundred bucks and get great IQ without the weather sealing/ruggedness if you prefer the small form factor and not having to carry/invest in lenses

That's just as much of an issue with a point & shoot, if not more. Almost none of them have any sealing, and most have motorized retractable lenses that are driven by plastic gears. I've had several cameras die after dirt got into the lens mechanism and jammed it. At least with an interchangeable lens camera you have a better chance at being able to clean the lens out or replace it, since the body is unlikely to be damaged.

You're also overstating the water issue. It just isn't a problem unless you dunk the camera in a stream or something. In a couple decades of climbing, hiking, caving, and biking with cameras, I've never seriously damaged an SLR. I don't use any sort of cover unless it's pouring rain, and then I just put the camera in a grocery bag with a hole torn for the lens.

Micro four thirds is hard to beat for this application. The cameras are light, small, reasonably durable, and have good image stabilization. There are some good pancake lenses and small telescoping zooms. They're also pretty cheap and some models have weather sealing.

Either a troll or a complete idiot. 700 shots on a battery is more than adequate for anything anyone would realistically need to do. M43 high ISO performance is not nearly as good as current FF sensors, but again it's still more than adequate for nearly all practical purposes. And the lens lineup is pretty great for a compact system. The difference in image quality between an m43 and APSC sensor is marginal, and the bodies and lenses are larger and heavier.

Go with a sony, they actually have the best battery efficiency of any mirrorless camera by a country fucking mile, and they can be charged off usb, I've even used a solar charger quite successfully. Mine has been skiing, to the hottest, sweatiest bits of south east Asia, out in pouring rain all with no issues at all.

A6300 is super cheap for what you get, but a 2nd hand a7ii is the bargain of the century.

Anything by Panasonic with an M43 sensor. Rugged, light, small enough. They have cameras to fit most budgets or you can buy used. The G7 is a good shout. Spend as little on the body as you can and invest as much as possible into GOOD LENSES. This will make the most dramatic difference, not whatever body you use.

For lenses, get a decent fixed aperture zoom lens and a solid prime (non-zooming lens) as they allow in more light for your low light situations.

You're on the move, may have to keep up with others, may have to get somewhere in time, weather may be shit, etc. Battery life has only been an issue once: when I lost my spare battery during an airport transfer and left my on camera to record a 40 minute video of the inside of my lens cap while mountaineering.

Second, my mid-tier 2011 m43 camera still outperforms my 2016 flagship phone easily. Not as easy to use, but the image quality is better, period.

Third, I've been doing most of my long distance hikes with a big lumpy FF DSLR with a few lenses, and while the image quality is top tier, after one-two-three weeks of non-stop hiking you start wishing you had something lighter. If you carry everything yourself on a long self-supported hike, you will start paying attention to the extra weight.

Fourth, increased depth of field is generally a major plus when shooting landscapes, you won't be bokehwhoring quite as often as in other circumstances.

I also reecomend you the Zomei Q666 tripod because it's cheap or a tripod in general.
The whole setup is nice, light and cheap.

They're talking about the entire lens line up, even when you get to 150mm, 300mm, or zoom pancakes. All smaller and lighter than the competition. Every system tends to have a 40mm equiv pancake and Fuji is no different. Pentax and fuji are weather sealed with weather sealed lenses and have larger better sensors and with fuji especially you can put a system together that's as compact as m43 with better specs and IQ. it's not even an argument, m43 is obsolete.

Did a little expo for 4 weeks out in Peru. Fellow photographer skimped on the 8 additional pounds. I brought a a7iii, 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 f4 with couple teleconvetters and a carbon tripod. He did alright but overall I btfo of him in every aspect.

If you literally just get in shape the extra weight isnt an issue, its negligible when you consider my ruck is already 50-60 lbs because the entire camp are a bunch of slack jawed fags and I helped them keep their loads at 20-25lbs by taking a bit off the weaker ones. Keep in mind we were doing 8-15 miles a day easy.

At the end of it all, are you a decent enough shooter where you will get great shots? or are you just a beginner and you want snapshits with a smaller camera.

P.s a lot of your shots will be cropped because I can tell from your indecisiveness that you're not a pro and you will regret the IQ because of 10 pounds.

You've backpacks that accommodate litres of volume, size isn't a problem, weigh is. Fujis are all metal, and weigh a ton. Personally, I'd eliminate them based on that. Bentax are ok, seen many people with them and they do well. Still, M43 is lightest by far.
And on zoom. Nighty percent of the time, you'll carry them without reason. Then there will be that day when everything will open up and you'll shot something magnificent. For me that's the main charm of m43. 300mm equivalent always in the bag, and it weighs less than a beer can.
Now, overall, for certain things. Even m43 is too heavy. Pointandshoot all the way. The lighter the better.

I use a Fuji X-T2, battery grip & Smallrig cage, and some pretty meaty lenses. It's really not heavy. Some of my older film cameras have more weight to them even with smaller lenses. The metal used in Fuji cameras isn't some cast iron shit, it's fairly light. In saying that, any camera will feel heavy if you're carrying it all day long. Even if you're in peak condition at the gym it's the cumulative weight around your neck or wrist all day long that wears at you, especially if you're hiking. Hitting the weights definitely helps the endurance but I'm glad the move to mirrorless has meant generally smaller cameras and lenses. Way easier than the old days.

I only use the Smallrig cage when I'm mounting on video gear. It's useful to have more than one shoe mount at times, sometimes I need to mount on more than just a mic. Like a monitor, or one of my LED light panels.

I slap bits and pieces on as and when needed. You can screw anything you want into it and it's really versatile. I strip down to the camera when needed too. A cage is super useful which is probably why the chinks make a ton for Sony cameras too.

If I'm counting grams I'd go for an RX100 III-VI for more reach if I want a camera with flip up screen and viewfinder and just put it in my hip pocket. I'd still buy an extra battery for it.
