What you are seeing is essentially radiation leaking up from the bottom of the film door and into the film sprocket holes. I presume this was taken after the Chernobyl disaster, many of the initial photographs that came out of the Soviet Union days after the reactor meltdown looked like this.

Gamma radiation doesn't leak, you need lead shielding to stop that shit, it would go through anything in the camera that isn't thick metal. It wouldn't be in small strips. The whole image would be white.

Since it's in line with the sprocket holes and only on one side, I imagine he brushed some hot particles on a particular sprocket as he was loading the film.
