Where do you upload your portfolio to share?
All popular photographers seem to be using instagram, but it makes no sense to me as you can only upload from your phone... Where do you upload film scans or digital files from a computer for people to see?

I'm only an amateur so don't need to build my own website or anything complicated yet.

Generally when I do a commissioned shoot or I shoot at a social event, I just upload the pics to a google drive and send the link to people.

As far as my "portfolio" goes, it's really just instagram. If tumblr wasn't a complete ghost town I would probably utilize that, but it is what it is.

Instagram is hateful and I dislike everything about it. For certain types of photography it can be the best internet tool though. You can get around phone only posting pretty easily by having chrome emulate being on a mobile device. Right click on the instagram page and select 'inspect'. You can then emulate being on a phone from your desktop. You sometimes need to reload the page in order to get full functionality.

Flickr and 500px used to be pretty popular/important but not anymore. Flickr just kinda collapsed under its own weight and was run by yahoo. By run I mean completely ignored and neglected. 500px's community is kinda toxic and it got bought out by a Chinese company known for scamming people and ignoring copyright law. Use it at your own risk.

the absolute best would have been to have your own website. i think a lot of photographers (including myself) use instagram becuase it is so easy to share with others, and for ohers to find your work. When it comes to uploading photos, upload them to dropbox on the computer, and open them on the dropbox app on the phone and save your photos from there. from experience that is the best way to get your photos in high quality, compared to screenshotting them from either fb , tumblr or some sort. good luck

Seriously, no one can recommend a better photography sharing platform than fucking instagram? Building my own website is fine, but that completely excludes the social media part of marketing yourself. Everyone is on Instagram. If you're talking about alternatives it's all shady shit no one uses like Vero and other Saudi investment fund nightmares. I wouldn't trust 500px anymore since they leaked everyone's passwords a few months ago and Flickr is more or less dead socially.

If you're trying to promote yourself you go where the biggest audience is, not the contrarian side option with a handful of users. Just how it is. Instagram is by far the biggest photo sharing social media in 2019. The other option is making a YouTube channel and use a channel to promote your photography but you need actual balls for that.

You don't have to crop into a square. There's ways to upload the original form factor albeit with some formatting changes. I use an app called Gbox (Android) to fit all my images into an Instagram format even if they're not square.

People have evolved certain traits hard wired into there brain from evolution they cannot escape.

One of these traits that companies have discovered is people are desperate for validation and by adding a like button people become enslaved to your app.
Even more so if you make the amount of likes they get public and put there name there too so everybody can see how many likes they get for their actions and how popular they are.
The final addition is to make your app as easy as possible to use. (you just take a photo on your mobile phone and upload directly-99% of the population can do this). And bang you have an app that has massive pyschological addiction power and almost zero effort to potentially gain validation.

These psychological forces are just way to powerful for photographers/artists to overcome. All of them got sucked into this app and are stuck on it.

Other apps/websites did exist which were way better suited to photographers but have all become ghost towns since Instagram turned up and all the photographers threw it all away to chase instagram likes.

The bad news for you OP is you wont be able to overcome these psychological factors either and you are going to get enslaved to instagram and chasing likes and having to upload your photos at postage stamp size in a shit crop at a quantity of one per day copying whichever page brought the most likes to try and maximize your likes.

It's both a cliche and the way you really need to do things.
