how? cause you actually have to edit the photos yourself? with film you just leave the emulsion formula in the hands of the experts and you pick what you think looks nice or works for you.

I have to edit both digital and film images, and film images require a ton more work to get. I develop everything myself, scan the negatives, and edit them in photoshop. Occasionally I'll have space for a pretty ghetto darkroom, so I'll print my images instead if I feel like it.

I agree.

I found it soul-sucking for me, because I feel like instead of emulating film, I'll just use film and get the look I'm going for natively. Digital is a fine tool for photography, it's just not my thing.

The genre is not the problem, architectural minimalism can be fine. But what he shot was barely that and not even remotely well done.

My D850 RAW files are about 100 MB, which means a 'large' 64 GB card fills a lot faster than usual. That and being mindful of my own computer storage space actually does cause me to be more careful with how I shoot. Sure, storage is cheap, but I don't want literal terabytes of snapshots filling my hard drive. Keep in mind that I still need to process said files in Photoshop, and the final .psds are usually something like a couple hundred MB each.

It's not about how good you are, it's about how much your work resonates with a particular client or gallery, and whether or not they want to put it on display in their home or a public gallery. You'll probably have to 'sell' your work by writing up some artist''s statement describing it's meaning.

because ideally if you know what you're doing and can expose / compose properly, you only need to shoot once. it signifies a mastery of your tool and your ability visualize and deftly execute the shot. I like to think most people still care about this process and hope to get to this point eventually.

but if you just want internet likes, spray and pray works too.

you sound like a tool that doesn't actually shoot. who has a subject and takes one shot without experimenting with different compositions and techniques? If you really think theres one shot worth taking and ignore any others you're lying to yourself that you have nothing to learn, and will therefore fail to grow as an artist.
And this neglects completely the fact that some shots you have in your mind a final product but require multiple shots to create, whether that be because timing a single perfect shot would be near impossible (BiF) or because you need multiple shots to stack focus (macro) or exposure (astro)

there may be one shot you see that you want to take. the point of 'one exposure per motive' is that you see the shot before you take the picture instead of probing the scene for something good. this obviously doesn't apply to things like studio portrait photography or shots that inherently require multiple exposures. this is a response to the idea of taking 20 and hope 1 will be good.

Neither of you are really wrong.

Get the shot exactly as you envisioned or experiment with angles, light and timing. There are some subjects I frankly wish I had shot more of myself, and I'd prefer to "overshoot" rather than "undershoot" a subject if that makes sense.

Try shooting on film. It will force you to think more before you shoot 20 shots of the same thing and then spend extra time in post-production trying to work out which of them is the best.

Or don't. You work your own way. Personally I prefer to be economical.

Ten years. I can now consistently take photos in the style that I was originally attracted to. But I can't ever evolve beyond that point. As much as I want to experiment and learn new things, I just keep falling back on what I know. It's a weird kind of purgatory.

You may be a photo master when you can get a perfect shot in one take, but you can never account for random events, like a bug zipping through your shot and ruining it. Always taking a few helps guard against that.

How old are you and what do you experiment?

I notice again and again that there is more to learn and to try. Although I had used bouncers on a flash gun regularly in my early days, yesterday, for example, I became aware that I rarely bounce using walls. If I do it's likely to be unflattering due to missing experience.

I've always used this without a thought, am 30, started photography at about 15 and took it serious or beyond parties and clubbing with about 20.

i still only shoot in jpeg though, i haven't had access to something like lightroom. i am trying to get better at composition, learning different techniques, etc
i do want a tripod soon to shoot long exposures at night and i do want an old film camera
