I traveled the entire US for years, teaching photography seminars, and had to look at a LOT, LOT, LOT of mediocre to very bad portfolios from a lot of entry-level "professional" photographers. One thing that I learned, that holds true today: MARKETING makes ALL the difference in the world. I met a LOT of mediocre photographers who were making a decent living at it, and also met a LOT of VERY talented, artistic photographers who had to work another, full-time job just to pay the bills and buy some groceries, either because they didn't market themselves effectively, or often, because they lacked self-confidence. And of course, there were the occasional "artists" who felt that mundane things like "selling" and "advertising" were beneath them.
