Because its so fucking dark, the only *light* really should come from the flash, so your subjects, as long as they are focused properly, never tend to be blurry since your fire your flash at 1/64-1/128, determining the brightness of your subjects. Lastly, fine tune with ISO.
This is probably what is going on here. You aren't relying on the length of the shutter speed to provide adequate lighting of your subject, rather, you *want* the darkness so the only light going in is what your flash provides, nothing else.
