The reduction to black and white removes color and thus color contrasts that may have caused the accentuation of unintentional elements or even blemishes (e.g. impure skin). Consistency often benefits from reduction, as many elements affect an image and it is harder to bring many variables together. For example, cropping and framing, subject relationships, foreground background relations, lines, diagonals, juxtapositions and other composition techniques, but also brightness, contrasts, color purity and color contrasts can each highlight different elements.
