Dear /p/.
I’m still learning about photography and would like to ask you about editing software and low light photography.
1) So far I was using Darktable for editing photos and it worked well so far. However, Im afraid that despite experimenting so far, I’m still not in proper control over how my pictures turns out in edit. To be more precise, I recently installed Corel Paintshop Pro 2019 (the key I got from Humble Bundle once) for curiosity and tried editing few photos and they turned out a bit better than the ones from Darktable - which probably means that I dont really understand either programs. Example is this one, edited with Paintshop (Darktable one in next post). I found some help at Corel site but it was a bit simple and more about suggesting automated settings. That’s why I want to ask - are there any detailed and step-by-step guides for fixing photos in either Paintshop or Darktable (instead of just covering options)? And is it better to learn Paintshop or rather stick with Darktable?
2) Second question is partially related to first one. On my camera, Nikon D5300, I often have to deal with more visible noise than what I would expect. Even photos at ISO 100 sometimes have visible noise in darker areas, when I open them in Darktable. And when trying to do stage photography, even in bright day (since stages are often under some kind of cover) I have to often use ISO 400-800 and inside buildings, when lighting is low, I have to go 1600-3200, which produce very intensive noise. At the same time, looking at those photos on camera itself shows noticeable less noise and better colors.
