Hi, i had to share this story with you guys. In France, on Thursday. I was walking around taking pictures, in the afternoon, I decided to go to this park and try a new film camera. That old guy asks me "is that digital" "nope sir, it's film". Then we chat a bit, and I tell him how I like to take pictures. Then he tells me "hey, I'd like to sell you my collection of 112 cameras, for 500€" "heh, interesting, de me your number and I'll think about it". Then i go take some pics, minding my own business. He comes to me "i live just 5 mins from here, come take a look". I say ok, and start to follow him. He tells me how he lived, that he was quite poor and saved every dime to buy his cameras during his life, that he's 94, and that his wife died in June. After 72 years of marriage. That reminded me how last year my grandma died, and how my grandpa followed her a month after. 92 years old, married for 70 years or so. So we enter his flat. He had a fuckton of photography material displayed in a glass shelf. We chat a bit, I asked him if he was sure he wanted me to get his cameras instead of his grandsons. He told me he wanted someone who would take care of his cameras. Then he said he was tired. We agreed to meet on Friday. I decided to give him a canvas printed picture of mine, and behind it i wrote "your camera are in good hands, live happily, anon". Then we met, and I start moving his cameras. He said he was a bit sad to see his shelf emptied, but relieved to see his collection in good hands. Before saying farewell, I handed him the money. "Here's the money, you can count." "it's ok, I trust you" "thanks sir, it's an honor to be your trust for your cameras" "with this money I'll be able to engrave a few words on my wife's grave" That guy just sold his lifetime collection to be able to honor his wife. Those words are just haunting me. Pic related: it's a part of the cameras, I think he liked to buy cameras, but doesn't seem to be an expert.

Among the cameras, there were 2 foca (French brand). And a braun super paxette, a tiny rangefinder. I was thinking about asking you if i was screwed, but after he told me what he would do with the money, the question is irrelevant. Now AMA.

They look to be in very good condition. Anything stands out in particular other than the Focas? Are you thinking of selling any of them?

Looks like he took care of these. He said he bought a few used ones. I showed only some reflexes, there are Polaroids, compacts, medium format brownies/dual lenses, and those very old collapsible ones. Here's a quick list of some cameras Canon ae1 program Pentax spotmatic Kodak retina s1 s2 Fuji ax3 Foca 1 Yashica electro 35 Chinon cx Konica t3 Praktica b 100 , bx20 Edixa prismaflex Kodak instamatic Exakta varex ii biotar 58 2 Voigtlander Vito cz Braun super paxette Rolleimat r Ricoh 500g Cosina csm Flexilette Zenit ttl, em Vitessa 126 cs Minolta hi matic e Savoy 38 Pentax mz30 I'll sell some of these, and will keep at least a few of them. The braun is a keeper for sure, it's so cute.

>>3502209 nice story but you got the short end of the stick with that deal. not even close to 500euro worth there.

Those are cameras from all the other gullible tourists he lured back to his flat and murdered, before he got too old to dig another shallow grave.

>>3502226 Those Retinas usually fetch some money. The Vito, the Pantecks, the Himatic and the Exacta should bring some money in too.
It's hard to imagine in 60 years that will be us trying to pawn off all our old Nikon D9's and Sony A7R15's on some hobbyist

Nice story anon. Life works in strange ways sometimes. Every decision we make can lead to something miraculous.

>>3502226 I wasn't expecting to make profit. I knew there would be garbage. Well, not that much, he knew shit about cameras.
Some looked like curiosities, experimental cameras, like the old German ones.
For the story? Totally worths it.
>>3502236 Must have been fun to dig a hole for pic related
>>3502278 He just lived and loved these cameras in a simple way. He's poor and quite uneducated.
>>3502280 In this case, it led to something nice, but not miraculous.
>>3502241 Just how much does your top level camera from 2010 worth now?
I started with a oly e420, then got a Pentax mx1. Even the oly lens is now outdated with the m43 mount.

He probably had a dealer over who picked out the good stuff and left you with the trash. That happens a lot with collections like these. You got scammed. 500€ for this pile of trash lmao.

>>3502186 You did well. Well, value-wise you probably overpaid a little (...except if one of those Focas happens to be the Universel RC, then I'm jealous), but how much is a lifelong memory like this worth? How much is a good deed worth?
I don't suggest keeping all of them, but the ones you enjoy and decide to keep will be extra special. I know I won't ever sell the Voigtlander Bessa I bought from my similarly ancient neighbor. She also just wanted someone to take care of it. Every now and then she still finds little camera bits and bobs (flashes, crappy macro filters, etc. - mostly worthless) and excitedly brings them over for me. Great old lady.

>>3502312 >How much does your camera from 2010 with now? I could sell every camera I own for more than I paid, easily. What's your point here? These are mostly junk cameras that sit in antique stores forever because there is zero market for them.

>>3502351 My point is : [MY] 2010 cameras are now worthless, especially since smartphones have excellent results in a smaller package.

>>3502367 Then you bought shitty 2010 cameras. I sold my 2011 Sony Nex 5n plus kit lens for about how much I paid for it and the Canon 5D Classic still commands a good price on the used market to cite a few examples.
Point is, nobody wants to buy your shitty 2010 Canon Rebel but there ARE older cameras that still command an excellent price used. People are just more informed than you are on what's worth buying.

>>3502356 >>3502362 Lol what
2004 bought a Mamiya 6 with 2 lenses for $800 which after inflation would be $1085. I could sell the kit for $1400 in a day in today's market.
2003 bought an Xpan with 45mm for $750 ($1040 with inflation). I could double my money on this one.
2009 bought a Minolta CLE with 40mm for $450 ($540 with inflation). The 40mm alone sells for almost that now.
Should I continue? Why would I lie about such a thing lol
>>3502367 What does that have to do with this post? All me and a few people are saying is that paying 500euro for this kit was a bad move from a financial and arguably practical standpoint. None of these cameras are even great. OP seems happy with having a bunch of weird, quirky cameras and enjoyed the interaction with the old guy so that's all that matters in the end.

>>3502312 2014, and still well over 1000 for the kit
If I sold it with all of my lenses and accessories as a complete kit, probably over 5000. Many of those lenses are pre-2010 and some of them are from the 60s and 70s.
>>3502367 My 1970's RB67 outfit is worth more than that whole lot and I only have two lenses and two backs.
Anonymous
>>3502209 Sorry Anon, you see this stuff often. Old people typically bought, for some reason, boatloats of consumer cameras all with mediocre specifications, but never system cameras or quality lenses. Huge collections are always a sign that it's 99% trash, because if they'd actually saved their money and bought much of anything good, then they wouldn't be constantly buying new crap.
