Taking photos in a public space = legally protected in MOST civilised countries
Just get close enough, take the picture, don't make eye contact and look beyond the person you're photographing so it looks like you're photographing something behind them. You're doing nothing wrong so there's no need to be nervous or frightened. Know your rights.
Autists like us will always find a reason to not do something so the only real solution is to face your fears and become more confident with practice.
