I’m shooting my first ever wedding on Saturday. I’m not getting paid and the marrying couple are my beat friends.
I have a Pentax K-S2, a 35mm Pentax prime and the kit 18-50mm lens.
What settings and lens should I use for most of the day? Any settings I should be using to ensure maximum quality?
I have the built in flash and also a big 80s directional flash which I’m jot that sure how to use. Please help.

As far as the lens goes, it is not exactly the perfect tool for the job, but i'd run the 35mm for most of the day. Since you don't have the convenience of an adjustable focal length on that, you're going to have to stay mobile.

If you have the social skills to take charge and be commanding while being fun and not an asshole, a combination of posed shots and candid shots are generally the best results. Fly on the wall style will probably lead to some disappointing results.

You're all set. Check your shots every few minutes to ensure you have what you thought you got, also to avoid shooting all day in silly setting. They are your friends, so ask them to give you some time to move and take a few shots on all their special moments. Drop all gear that's problematic on set. E.g. drop the flash if recycle time is too long or if x-sync results in weird aperture settings.
Test the location the days before to get a feeling for available light and directions good to photograph during morning, mid-day, afternoon, evening.

Post processing can rescue a lot in exposure, color and fov, not so on (motion) blur.

If shooting outside, use the sun as backlight. I'd also do +0.5 EV so faces aren't counter-lit, but that depends on the setting.

35mm is great for portraits. Zoom with your feet. Check photos at slow moments but don't chimp. Bring extra batteries and media.

Shoot raw (only occasion when I would shoot raw), don't share images until edited and organized.

I’ve never done portrait photography or event photography so I will happily hate it and carry on doing my usual shit.

Thanks. I intend to use the kit lens until it gets dark (in U.K. so should have good light until like 8) then switch to the 35mm F2.4 which should work.

I do also have an Xpro2 but I’m thinking the Pentax is more durable and reliable. We’re also camping so I don’t want to take like £1500 worth of camera gear. I will be drinking heavily and having fun.

I’m going to pass my Pentax around to others to let them have a go. This might be a terrible idea.

Bail. Way too much stress for no money. They may be your friends, and they may be having a small wedding, but they’ll still expect professional quality photos. You don’t have the right equipment for the job my friend. Shooting a wedding with a 35mm lens sounds like a nightmare. How on earth are you going to get candid shots of the ceremony? Gonna stand up there right next to the groom?

If you go ahead with this, I’d be crystal clear with your friends about what you can reasonably provide. Tell them you can take staged portrait shots of them, along with their bridesmaids and groomsmen, and some candid shots of the reception, but that shooting the ceremony itself will be practically impossible.

Imagine exploiting your "best friend" into doing free work just because you're too cheap to hire a professional photographer for the most important day of your lives. And you're so clueless you actually think a WEDDING will be "really casual". There is no such thing as a casual wedding, even ones run on the cheap. It's the most stressful and heavily planned event of this couple's lives.

There's literally only one social event in anybody's lives where top class photography is crucial enough to be paid for and that's marriage. You are going to hate the day and the couple will resent you for giving them a handful of half-assed keepers. This is such a massive mistake and there's at least 3-4 threads like this on /p/ every year. They always report back that the experience was so hurtful it ruined friendships. And you plan to "drink heavily and have fun" while being the PHOTOGRAPHER AT A WEDDING? Your keeper rate is going to be so low an they are going to be so pissed off. It's your job to stand back and capture the event, not be a drunk slob with a camera in hand. Jesus Christ.

Just don't do it. Lie that your camera has died and you can't afford to replace it. Don't fucking shoot this wedding. If you want to have fun and get drunk, do that instead of being the official photographer for the event. THIS NEVER EVER EVER GOES Well. Learn from the past and don't repeat it.

If you're going to ruin their wedding photography, at least take it seriously and rent the equipment needed out of your own pocket. Get a decent fast tele lens and a speedlite plus stand on rental at the very least. Be a professional so when you fuck up you at least look like you gave a shit and tried. You sound like you're gearing up to treat this event like a casual joke, getting wasted and passing your camera around. If you want any chance of walking away with these people still your friends, you need to act professional and at least look like you're trying. Don't fall into the trap of assuming because the couple seem relaxed and carefree that they actually are that way.

Or they could be expect OP to give them professional quality work for free. While it sounds shitty, a lot of non-photographers undervalue photography and think that literally any idiot with a dslr can do the same job as a 20 year professional. There's a lot of horror stories floating around of couples offering photographers to shoot their wedding 'for exposure' or worse, for free food at the reception. I wouldn't put it past OP's friends to be these types of people.

Friends didn't want me to be a photographer at their wedding, probably because we discussed appropriate prices several times in advance and they weren't willing to spend that much. They were looking for photographers who were well below the usual prices, sidelancers which were very significantly lower than the usual prices.
I saw very clearly the photographers that had litte notion.
All the bridal couples were happy with their pictures and wanted me to give them feedback, that I phrased out positive. Truth is, I always had the impression that more would have been possible, but also with more effort. I would have offered my help to the photographers, but not everyone accepts that gladly.

I’m mainly a street and (as of recently) and architecture photography enthusiast so I may be able to take some nice candid shots with the 35mm (50mm equivalent). I do it on the street all the time.

The groom and groom are literally my best pals and I won’t fall out over something so trivial. There are a lot of people coming but they have said they want me to enjoy myself. I don’t think they realise how much pressure wedding photographers are under and I’ve told them that the photos will be shit.

My kit lens 18-50mm should work during the ceremony as it’ll be daylight. I’m still nervous about the clacking of the camera... I need to find the silent shutter mode. I may even just not shoot it as it’s not even a proper marriage contract thingy they’re doing.

They will once they see the results and realise they can't print or show them off. Their family may be even more pissed than them to be honest.

You can't learn flash in less than a week. Go to the Strobist website and go through their course. Or leave it in TTL mode and pray. But yeah. You normally have multiple flashes around the room that you trigger remotely. With one flash you're going to struggle.

Your attitude is really not helping things. If these people are your best pals then you should want to do your best for them even if it's for free. This is the biggest day of their lives and you should act like it. It's partly their fault by not paying you, they must think very little of photography to do that.

If I were you I'd stress to them the importance of hiring a professional, tell them how they'll be looking back on these photos for decades. Hopefully they see sense. You've been given an impossible task to an inexperienced photographer and asked to work for free. Tell them, in good conscience, you can't be the one to ruin their wedding photos. And enjoy the day.

Can you give me more hints on that? I've tested this once at home and wasn't happy at all, because of nasty shadows, rim light and backlight, butterfly at some point as I also assume people are moving. I'm at the point that I wouldn't ever try this on a wedding.
I'm much more happy with an on camera flash, light shaping bouncers or bouncing with ceiling and walls.

You'd normally want to work out the lighting ratio with a light meter to make sure you don't end up with shit like that. Take a reading at ambient, take a reading with one flash, take a reading with another. Then work out the average so it's pleasing around the room. It involves a lot of trial and error, normally photogs have it down where they can dial flash power up or down to keep it consistent.

Pleasing event flash takes a ton of prep which is why you hire a professional for a wedding. They're usually there before the event working all this out with the space given. And they don't get drunk and stupidly hand their Pentax around. They keep their distance and record the event.

Just don't. Get a Godox V1 or something at the very least if you can't set up studio strobes in strategic locations according to the event schedule.

Basically not enough. Tell him to hire a photographer or at least rent some higher-end FF gear (probably 2 cameras -one could be prosumer APS-C if you must- with a nice prime or two and a zoom lens) and use it for 1-2 days of running and gunning at least before you go in there.

It's still going to be tiring regardless, maybe you shouldn't have to do this.

I think secretly that OP's friends think his work is absolutely horrible shit they'd never buy a print of it but they'd rather save money than have their special day captured by a professional. So they ask him to work for free. Which is retarded on so many levels, especially because OP doesn't see it as an insult that his work is seen as worthless to them. Like I'd be out based on that. He can enjoy it as a best friend and not as exploited labour.

No...? If you have multiple flashes or light sources, a light meter is a must for efficiency and yes, you have to work out an average exposure of all the light sources yourself because every lighting situation is different. But it's a lot easier than firing off dozens of shots until you nail it.

You take an ambient reading, note it, make the light meter wait for a flash, take that flash exposure reading, then make it look out for a second flash, take that exposure, then balance them out. It should then look pleasing if you've done it right as all the light sources are balanced and even.

Also the anon said "keep it short" so I did. If you want a big seminar on how to work out lighting ratios, search it on YouTube. There's two hour videos on this kind of thing. Or again, go here.

Not same anon, but on a basic level (when you're not aiming for particular effects) it's actually not that much more difficult than having *powerful* mostly large diffuser or ceiling/wall bounced flash units in larger rooms so that large areas of diffuse light illuminate what are groups of people from directions other than full frontal or just from one side.

Mixing in some medium size (beauty dish etc.) hard-ish lights won't ruin your shot either, but the soft light is what you generally want most.

With an older setup, but IMO it's more efficient to do once a quick TTL calibration ("TCM" on a Godox set, Prophoto also has this, so do others) then just adjust the result as you please.

You got a nice shot preview with a histogram and exposure stripes for over/underexposed areas in your camera anyhow if you want to make adjustments. Actually IMO a good remote flash control unit matters more, even without TCM you can easily make adjustments on the fly and your camera kinda constantly provides the most important metrics anyhow.

If someone doesn't want to pay for someone's photography then you're saying the work has no value. You should see that as a sign that your friends don't think your work is worth paying for. I think that's clear. Being friends with someone doesn't mean exploiting them for free work. If anything, your friends should believe in your work more than the average person and be willing to pay. But you're being made to do stressful work... for free.

Have very low expectations and make sure THEY DO AS WELL.

Make sure you can make photos of just the couple somewhere. Ideally you want nice background and ability to shoot them in good light. If you can find a place where you have nice light on them, ideally with a darker background (e.g. sunrise, sunset) then do that and you'll have good photos no matter what and they'll save the crap you'll get from the ceremony which likely won't be properly lit, you won't catch the right moments, people will be obstructing you etc.

If you think their choice to not pay you has nothing to do with the quality of your work then that's cool, I don't know how cheap they are and maybe it's all motivated by budget. But really, if you're this close with them to call them best friends, you should be able to tell them the truth and vice versa. So tell them exactly what you told us, you're going to be shit at wedding photography, it doesn't interest you in the slightest, you plan to get drunk and not give a fuck (pass the Pentax around meme). Tell them the brutal truth of it all and let them think about it or talk to family. They should understand and hopefully there's a pro they can get on the cheap at short notice. It'll be worth it, they can cut back on the shrimp budget and put some into a pro photographer who understands how a flash works.

Didn't watch the video for context but photographing guests eating makes for unflattering and even gross photos. Camping next to where they serve food beforehand is better, cutting cake, etc makes for easy good images.

They'll still expect quality shots from you even if they don't pay you. If not the couple then the couple's parents, cousins, uncles etc. They'll all be poring over these photos after the ceremony. Since you really need to photograph everyone at a wedding, not just the bride and groom. It's a symbolic joining of two families so everyone has to be included.

This thing is going to be a massive trainwreck like every other time a /p/hotographer has shot a wedding with no experience or planning.

People care because this is a very important event for two families and often these photos hold massive significance for years to come for a lot of people, parents, family members, the wedded duo. It's not a boomer thing to care about good photography, I'd assume we all care a bit. And nobody wants artistic masterpieces but they do want GOOD photos. Consistently good, across the whole night. Clear, well-framed, well-lit. Professional looking photographs of each stage in the ceremony.

I guess people in here and wedding photographers are a bit too cautious on people shooting their first wedding. Of course there may be types that better don't bother to even try and I'd also recommend to first shoot people, couples, less important events and even repeatable shoots. I know at least a few examples that shot their first wedding in photography year 2, attended by courses and tfp shoots before, with experienced coshooters supporting them. Everyone who's eager should at least try.

I actually did a much better job than I thought I would.
Using the flash was easy and if I had better equipment (longer lens and a proper DSLR) I think I could easily become a wedding photographer. I won't though because it's vapid and dull.
Here's an example of a flash photo. So fuck you, /p/. I did it and it was good.

I honestly think you actually underestimate it, are still blind to some things. Your photos are probably good! Probably you could do it much better still, more consciously and learn a lot. The other question is whether the additional effort is appreciated by the viewers, I think not very often. But there are exceptions!

This is bad. It's the kind of picture flash tutorials use as an example of what not to do. The people look washed out and sickly because you've either exposed too much in camera then fired flash or used too strong a flash power. You probably think it's a good shot because you're friends with the people in the photo and you remember the good times of the wedding, but objectively it's a bad example of flash photography.

Before you flash you should set your camera to the ambient light in the area and use the flash to fill it in. Sometimes that means the subjects aren't super well exposed in your viewfinder before you press the shutter but that's okay, you're using the flash to fill them in.

It's okay though, you've at least tried. I'd advise you keep learning flash because you clearly have skills built up the last five years. Learning flash or how to control lighting can only boost your skill set as a street photographer. Definitely sets you apart from the pack who barely understand aperture priority.

Thanks for the advice. I was getting really good results using fill flash in the day time but yea it was a bit trickier at night. The marquee was white and the flashes aimed up worked a treat but lots of people were chilling outside.

I think so too. As far as I'm concerned I was spot-on with you just not really having the gear to conveniently do this.

This also applies to >>3516146; had you done this on a better FF body with a prime and maybe even some portable studio strobeor powerful porrtable flash with a diffuser somewhere off-camera, that'd have turned out prettier.

I guess if the couple is happy with this result (or a post-processed variant of it), that's fine - but it isn't really good in terms of technical quality.

My quick tip is to use a light meter app on your phone. Photography autists turn their nose up at them but they're really good for learning since you have quick access to your phone at all times.

Take a reading without flash, set it to wait for a flash, look at that new exposure and set your camera/flash accordingly. If you're using TTL all you do is lift the flash exposure up or down a bit. Takes all the guess work out of it. Otherwise you're fumbling taking lots of test shots before one looks good and guests are pissed off waiting for you to get it right.

Why, if importing RAWs into PC and bulk converting them to JPEG is just few clicks?
RAW+JPEG is just waste of burst shooting speed and storage space on SD card.
Most cameras also often already include low-res JPEG thumbnail in the RAW file for previews.

Raw+jpeg doesn't impact your burst shooting rate, it bursts then writes to card which is why there's a buffer after some time. If you're legitimately worrying about storage space in 2019 you must be really poor. You can get 128gb SD cards and beyond for dirt cheap these days. From reputable brands too. It's really not a concern. I've not yet run out of space on my 64gb card inside my X-T2 and I shoot a lot. I also run a constant back up to a second 64gb card and it doesn't impact burst shooting. It helps that SD cards are getting faster and faster with some camera manufacturers supporting UHS-II.

I shoot RAW and JPEG because once in a blue moon the camera gets it 100% right and I feel happy keeping that around. Pic related was one of those times. But 9/10 I need to tweak some things in post, which requires a RAW file.

A close friend of mine is getting married and wants my other friend and I to take photos of their wedding. We’re getting paid a small amount. My friend is an animal photographer and is honestly amazing at photog and great with post-processing. Me on the other hand I’ve shot concerts and festivals and was pleased with the results but I feel like people think I’m a better photographer than I really am because I don’t know a lot of shit.l, but I’ve lucked out and shit some decent pics.

Anyway we will both be using Canon 80Ds, and we both have 70-200mm f/2.8’s (his is the Tamron SP G2, mine is the Canon L IS mk I), 50mm f/1.8 and 24mm f/2.8. I also have a flash but I’ve never used it.

The wedding is outdoors in a couple weeks. About 80 guests total. My friend is the “lead” and I’m the assistant. Am I over my fuckin head or will I be ok? Any tips for me?

Start using your flash now. Set it up and test different techniques on a family member (or yourself on self-timer). Fill, backlit, understand how shutter and flash sync speed work together, etc.

No, with two people and fairly decent gear you're probably quite well-prepared.

Just learn how to bounce your flash (not hard, but TTL may not automatically ETTR on bounce and you need to configure / correct strength a bit manually). If your flash is powerful enough, it'll probably be fine.
