Hey guys, question. I just bought a Nikon Coolpix B500 because I needed a cheap(ish) camera to take some pictures on my upcoming holiday trip, and figured this was the next best thing after a DSLR. Long story short, for some reason all my photos look like crap, blurry as hell even though I've cranked every single option available. My piece of shit Xiaomi phone takes way prettier (and more focused) pictures than this.

Is this camera just a piece of shit, or am I too retarded to figure out how to use it?

bridge cameras usually aren't great but it should at least be keeping up with a smartphone, does it look worse than other sample pictures from the same camera that you can find? post some pictures so we can see if something is fucked with the lens/sensor

Here's a picture taken with the camera. I downloaded in low-res mode due to SnapBridge being so slow, but you can see how blurry it looks.

Here's a picture taken with my (very cheap) phone. It's not perfect, but I notice some more detail than with the (significantly more expensive) camera I just bought.

Looks like shake during exposure. That will result blur no matter how good/bad the gear is.

Do you have vibration reduction on and still get all blurred images handheld? Blurred images even if you put camera on tripod or firm surface and use self timer? If so then it it is broken.

Cheap camera "next best to DSLR" is a 2nd hand DSLR or mirrorless kit from last 15 years.

Yes. Out of 10 pictures I take, 9 come out blurred. The opposite happens with my smartphone.

Well, either it is user error or camera is not working properly. (Assuming the one example you posted is typical. Exif was not helpful.)

Vibration reduction is no magic. If you zoom all the way and light is poor enough exposure time will get too long for handheld even with vr.

the exposure was too long, it's blurry because your hand shook. try cranking it up to 1/60 or 1/100. if it looks dark, increase the light.

Return that pile of shit tell them it’s fucking broken. If you really want to take above smart phone pics spend the extra $200 and get a used mirrorless. Don’t care what brand or stick with your cellphone if you’re happy with it.

Many Xiaomi phones actually have pretty decent camera sensors.

Well, you found out that this is essentially a smartphone camera with zoom.

You probably want a decent MILC/DSLR with a decent lens - same as everyone else who wants pretty photos.

Like others have said, bridge cameras are garbage. They have phone sized sensors crammed into a massive body, usually with selling point being ULTRAMEGA ZOOM because that's all boomers understand.

Return it and get yourself a good camera with a decent sized sensor. The bigger the sensor, the more depth of field (blurry background/subject separation) you can achieve and the better it works in low light. A full frame sensor or APS-C sensor is about as small as I'd go.

Pic related is why your camera sucks just like all other bridge cameras.

Phones is much better with vibration. The smaller the sensor less vibration it causes. Your two elephants samples are also taken in low light. With nikon you'll need to stabilize cam well before shooting in low light. It'll auto to low shutter speeds that will cause motion blur. On other hand, you have iso controls. So you can up iso and get faster shutter speeds at some image quality loss.
Anyway, stick with it and eventually you'll be taking much better images compared to phone.
