I bought an old SLR for $15 at an estate sale. I think the previous owner died since the entire house's contents were for sale.

it has some old film in it already. Is it wrong to get this film developed?

What if he had crazy illegal shit on there? Would I get in trouble?

It's your duty to develop those photos anon. It might be a good idea to make your intentions obviously public beforehand, to lend credence to the fact that you did not take the photos yourself. Really you could even contact your local police and say "I own some second hand film and I have no idea what's on it, I'm going to get it developed but thought I should tell you now that it could be anything. Anything". Make sure you move your eyebrows like gif related when you say the last part.

mystery film is great. I always develop the photos from second hand cameras I acquire, I've never come across illegal shit it's always family photos.

Even when film was most popular, very few people documented illegal or seedy/sleazy shit on film because the lab would see it. They shot on Polaroid if they wanted anonymity.

I had a roll developed that I found in my camera recently, I didn't realise it had been rewound multiple times so there's 3-4 exposures including mine.
