what the fuck? We have 400 megapixel cameras now. Why do ALL image viewers choke at resolutions higher than 50 megapixel (which is fucking TINY btw)?

also general photo viewer software thread, what do you cucks use to browse your photographs?

The truth is photography isn't as important as video to the world.

So while Video gets all sorts of modern wavelet based codecs and what have you, photography is still stuck with JPEG from 1992.

Sony and Canon are constantly researching newer and more sophisticated video codecs. But they haven't given two fucks about upgrading from JPEG.

So your Image viewers have that as the starting point.
Image viewers don't give a flying fuck about the camera manufacturers' RAW files.
And camera manufacturers don't give a flying fuck about the Image Viewers' JPEG codec.

They are two industries who work against each other.

Browse images at a resolution of your choosing.
Up and down arrows to cycle through images and seemingly instant with no lag between images and hit space to select images as you go.
I cull from 800 photos of a sports game in about 3-4 minutes.

There are good new image formats, like FLIF, but nobody fucking supports them due to not-invented-here syndrome.
The only new one to get any modicum of support is webp, but webp still sucks and only exists because google is pushing it.
There's also HEIC (if you count iPhones) but that's basically just a jpeg using the H.265/HVEC codec.

Honestly though, video codecs are "easier" to make.
Video codecs are lossy, so it's just an affair of figuring out how the codec can approximate the video without visibly loosing quality. Since the image is constantly changing every 1/30 of a second, a fairly decent amount of info can be cut out.
Photos are different though. Everyone shoots RAW because it's a lossless representation of the image. The second you apply a lossy encoding you're loosing quality, which then becomes a matter of how much smaller you want to make the file before the image looks like ass. Sure H.265 looks better than H.264 at the same file size, but it's still lossy.
The only other option is to make compressed lossless formats, which are nice for storage size, but drastically increase the processing power needed to view the image.

HEIC also works on Win10, Android 9 and OSX these days.
Google and Mozilla won't touch it with a 10ft pole though due to the shitty licensing and because they are going to push AVIF.
I've played around with AVIF a while ago. It's pretty neat but a bit of a pain in the ass to encode at the moment.
The only reason HEIC got into Android is because they had to support HEVC, one of the advantages of using video codecs for stills is that you can use the same (hardware) decoder to decode them.

Lossy is a good thing, it's how the image is spread on the internet.

And if we don't get a replacement for it, our grandchildren in the next century will still be fiddling around with JPEG shit from 1992.
