Any tips on editing images for prints?

I want my images to look as close as possible to what I see on screen. Most of them look like pic related.

Also I was explaining a 5yo what shutter speed is with examples and she wanted to make one too. In the end she got a really nice one and now wants it as a poster. How can I make light trails look decent when printed?

I have never done the last one for photos, only for vector documents used for flyers and posters. I'd be happy if someone had any links for colorproofing photos.

I thought about this too, but seems a bit costly

It's not too bad if you print there in future and then after the first prints you can keep the experience like "I have to lighten up a bit and all the red tones come out darker".
That the colors themselves look wrong is rare, rather black or white look tinted. Desaturation of black and white helps massively against this, if not, it is a problem of the service and you can complain for refund or reprint.

You can get calibration tools and devices that let themselves be calibrated (displays and so on), but that's vastly more expensive for a few prints than trial & error.

Besides exact replication isn't needed for "looks nice". Just try nice glossy paper on a high resolution inkjet and print.

You can post it a bit better, but then it still depends on viewing distance as much as the technical details.

As-is, it looks shit on muh monitor, so I'd derive that it only looks good at a short viewing distance to about A4 / letter format prints? Unless it's the JPEG compression.

BTW if you just want to reward your five year old for participation: Selphy 1200/1300 with KP-108IN are actually a fairly good choice.

Just 4x6" but good quality and *coated* and the ink won't fade for a long while.

Yes, it's comparatively expensive per print, but still far cheaper than Polaroid and so on were. And the coating is a good idea for kids.
