What lens can I use to achieve this instashit style?
Aiming to rent a sigma art lens for the weekend and I'm assuming I'd have the best luck with a 105 1.4 or 135 1.8.

My canon 50 1.4 almost never leaves my body. After being able to take photos in the dark with this thing its hard to go back to zooms. I finally bought a real B+W polarizer instead of the off brand I've had forever, hopefully its worth it and not just a meme. I desperately need it to darken skies to compensate for that canon dynamic range.

because the notion you need wide angles for landscape is a meme

my preferred focal lengths are 21mm and 35mm on 35mm film. i shoot pretty much everything except portraits.

I have a 50mm f1.8 (don't use much) and a 100mm f2.8 macro.
I shoot APSC. Looking for a crispy wide-angle prime for astro/general snapshits, something fast, around 18-28mm equivalent.
Any recs for Pentax glass that fits that criteria and costs under 200 freedom bucks?

It has other advantages like for example beeing very fast, some primes go to f/1.2 but most of the normalnor short focal lengths are f/1.7 to f/2.0.
Primes also tend to be sharper than zoom lenses of simmilar price and tend to have less chromatic abberations.

For which mount? Irix would be the best answer, but isn't in your price range.

Auto Beroflex 200mm f/3.5. Compact, excellent handling and OK sharpness wide open to very good @f/4.5. Build quality is excellent.

The Canon FD 200mm f/2.8 is another alternative is you can manage the chrome abs in PP.

The AIS updated version is far superior & what I’m currently using but damn the size & weight and gorgeous patina/enamel wear of that UD is fantastic.

I'm tempted by a prime lens because I had a stroke and its a pain in the ass to adjust zoom one handed. I mostly stick to about 25mm on my kit lens(APSC camera). Mostly landscapes/buildings.

I have a Nikon prime lens for my Nikon Df for pretty much every focal length from 20 to 200mm with the exception of the coveted 105 double gauss and I am trying to decide which flavor of the 105 I want.

The silver nose pre-AI has a Carl Zeiss Sonnar design very similar to the 85 Sonnar and the later model has better coatings and AI metering but no background swirl and they cost more usually. And then there's the 105 1.8.

I have this exact model of 20mm the later models optically aren't much better but they have AI coupling and work on more Nikon cameras natively. I had a 20 2.8 AI-s and I prefer the UD and it looks right at home on something like the Df or my FE. It is the only UWA I have that works on my Nikkormat and whatever Photomic F I decide to purchase.

On the plus side sticking to 25mm is stopping me from taking several unnecessary photos of the same thing at different focal lengths, bad habit I used to have. But the option is nice, thanks anon.

Which prime should I get? 35mm or 50mm?

Main use will be when I'm traveling so mostly it would be for buildings, low lighting and portraits. I'm leaning towards 35mm personally but it's a hard choice.

I used to think the same thing but I've noticed it can have some advantages over a kit lens like having less distortion and much wider apertures. The largest my kit lens can go at 35mm is something like f3.5 but a prime version could go as low as f1.4, so it would be ideal for better DOF, low lighting etc.

A great bag of lenses, and you can get clean examples of all of these for about $125 each if you look hard enough. Zooms are for chumps.

Adapted SMC-Pentax 1.7/50mm perhaps. It's pretty sharp when stepped down. Wide open there is some CA.

A/F is for people who use Pmode and don't actually like making photos. If anyone here actually gave a shit about IQ and the process of photography they would have learned it themselves instead of asking fucking 4chan in the hopes that the knowledge of seasoned professionals will magically transfer over the internet. Want to know about quality and what is right for you? Use as many different lenses/ bodies/ light techniques and subject as you can. Want to know about the process of photography? Find a gig and a mentor. Simple. Fucking niggers man, I swear.

The Tamron SP 45mm f/1.8 is fucking amazing. I got lucky and haven't had to microadjust.

Tamron's SP lenses in general are sharp as fuck right into the extreme corners, wide open.

Tamron has a really good lens design team and computer software.
Sometimes Zeiss and Sony actually wants to be their customer and source them as lens designer. That's how much clout they have.

I'm looking forward to the 3 primes they are about to release for mirrorless myself. Next year is going to be a massive rivalry between Tamron and Sigma in the mirrorless space.

Since I got the Sony 24mm/1.4 last year, it almost never leaves my camera.

Having said that, I still want the Signa 35mm/1.2. It look like the perfect environmental portrait lens and I could use it a lot when I shoot concerts

Depends on the subject. In my shot here >>3533107 you'd probably just have nothing but buildings in frame with a 35mm. 35mm is also a more traditional focal length for street photography, but when you use it for portraits it's immediately noticeable between the two.

I like using APS-C mode on my camera to get a 35mm-like focal length, but you need to be really careful with your framing because of the smaller mp count

Yeah, it's a pretty great lens. You can see the clear separation in the bottom left where the umbrella is soft but the street sign is sharp. It's just too tempting to not just live with the lens always wide open.

That new Sigma 14-24 F2,8 is tempting me. It's like having a 14mm, 18mm, 21mm, 24mm all in 1 lens. A set of primes definitely wouldn't be as cost effective.

I'm indecisive about that zoom vs the 24GM.

The 24GM is 450 gram.
The zoom is 800 gram, which is impressive compared to the original dslr version (1150 gram).

So while the zoom is really light for what it is, the prime lens is still half the weight and qualify as the better walk around lens.

Depends how much you're going to use the ultra wide focal length. If there's significant vignetting at the wide end, then you just have to weigh your options.

I'd probably go for the GM and try to find a deal for an ultra wide Voigtlander prime to complement it

I've decided to disqualify the Sigma zoom. 800 gram is just too much when its other two competitors are 400 gram.

But now I just got into a new headache.
The Tamron 17-28 is an insane value proposition at 900 bucks.
It's the same, or slightly less weight as the 24GM.

The indecisiveness continues.
I guess this is just what happens when I have 3 extremely good lenses all vying for my wallet.

But I'm tipping towards the GM, because I don't have an F1,4 lens yet. And it would be nice to have one just in case of low-light emergency.

I feel ya bro. I'm trying to decide if I should pick up one of those super-versatile Tamron zoomies, or go full retard with primes (pic related). Both Voigts seem very nice, but it so difficult to truly appreciate their niceness (vs a zoom) without actually using them.

And of course there is the thing that MF-only feels bit intimidating, not sure if that is worth it
