What I did was look through /p/ but I realize it's mostly attempts at fine art or genres closer towards the older legendary photographers.
Personally I'm a Thomas Heaton fanboy because he often vlogs and talks to you about where he is what he does and how hes gonna do the shot.
You get enough ideas and study enough, then go outside and try your hand at framing, composition and finding subjects.
Then post here and hope someone good guides you to improve by trashing you and your work.
I am getting better because of that. Try it out.
