"Oh, is that a Nikon? How do you like it?" and stuff like that. If the person obliges the question, and continues to ask back about gear and other stuff, then they're usually gearfags.
If the person obliges the question, maybe asks back the same thing, but then keeps talking to the other person about other things, then they're usually alright.
That's not to say, that ALL who talk about gear are terrible to interact with, and that ALL who don't are super pleasant.
It's just that the less gearfaggotry going on, the more pleasant it tends to be.
Unfortunately, because of the nature of my major, which is very much concerned with self-image (much more so than the average Western young adult), there are plenty of situations of gear dick-waving and measuring. It's just a symptom of an already not-so-pleasant sickness in my major.
