I mean (assuming the exp compensation is set to 0) the camera centers the meter needle for you instead of fiddling with aperture/shutter speed to do the same thing.

In the other situations when centering the needle is not optimal (backlit or other strange lighting conditions) you can simply use a different metering mode instead of evaluative/matrix or use the dreaded exp compensation op is talking about.

Aperture priority with Auto ISO tends to be too conservative with shutter speed for certain applications and if you want to stop down from wide open to get more sharpness from your lens you're shit out of luck with Shutter priority most of the time.

That said, all the modes have a place in my heart.
If anything because my camera doesn't have C1, C2 and such so you can use the various modes as pseudo preset profiles

With Sony cameras you can set a minimum shutter speed for A. It will only increase the ISO at this point and stay with the minimum.

Why would you not use the widest possible setting? Or at least setting a higher ISO? I mean you should already have done a few test shots to see what the camera was going to do in the current lighting. A simple half press of the trigger on my Canon gives me the calculated shutter speed.

Because widest possible on a super telephoto is around f4, isn't the sharpest possible, and will often cause you to miss focus because of very shallow dof on super telephoto. And locking iso too high often causes overexposures. Birb against tree canopies and same birb on the sky demands widely different exposures. For the former it'll be brighter than background and for the later background will be much brighter.

There are times where you should shoot in manual mode and there are times automatic modes are usefull.

Manual mode is great here.

Automatic modes are great here.

It's mostly an amateur move to use manual only in a futile effort to appear more professional.

Av/Tv mode bad, pros use M is the premise of this thread. If you are telling me to fiddle with all the settings in less than a second then you don't go outside.

Doesn't exposure compensation basically change what the middle is on the light metre, (and what the camera considers perfectly exposed).

So like even if you're in M, don't you still need a light metre? If theres another way to get perfect compensation other than a light metre or trial and error with sunny 16 rule, pls let me know.

It depends on the camera. On some bodies exposure comp does nothing in manual mode.
