I'm at the point about landscapes and how you shouldn't have unrelated objects in the foreground on the top of the image, it's an interesting book but I lol'd about gear not mattering

I mean to a point it doesn't matter but there are just some things a Canon Powershot can't do that a Nikon Df can. I would tend to agree with him in good light gear doesn't matter, but anything outside of perfect conditions it does up and to the point of law of diminishing returns

addressing an academic incident that I found to be revealing
and absurd, and that gets to the heart of a deep-seated conviction
of mine, which is that today’s colleges and museums,

University. It is a true story, which I heard about directly from
the person involved, as well as from the late Bill Jay, a good
friend of mine and a noted history of photography professor
at ASU. Other names are withheld to protect the innocent.
The person in question was a student in the Master of
Fine Arts (MFA) program at ASU. He had completed all of the
classroom work for the MFA and had to propose a final photographic
project to the MFA advisory board for approval. An
advisory board may be comprised of a single professor or a
small group of professors involved in the program. Once the
project is approved, the subsequent work must be submitted
to the same committee and deemed worthy, after which the
student receives the MFA degree.
The MFA candidate proposed a project that involved the
landscape and it was rejected by the MFA committee. I do
not know the details of the proposal, but let’s set that aside
for the moment. At the same time the landscape proposal
was rejected, a fellow MFA student submitted a proposal in
which he outlined his plans to make a set of 36 photographs,
arranged in a 6×6 grid, of his own fecal matter in the toilet,
with a list below each image detailing everything he had eaten
in the previous 24hours. This proposal was accepted.

Yes I read the book. Not a fan of Sontag. Sure, there’s more to the book than merely her bit about the phallic nature of the camera. Ultimately her conclusion is to push for more women in photography, and a more female-centered photography, which is precisely what I’d expect from a lesbian cultural theorist. I just didn’t find her particularly useful, whereas Flusser totally enlightened my photography in a new way.

Flusser distinguishes between the artist-photographer and the “unconscious photographer,” know affectionately here as the snapshitter. He says the goal of the artist-photographer is to “play against the camera,” to use it in unexpected ways, and to treat the camera itself with a sort of contempt. Basically, to experiment and comment on the medium itself within the photographic process, rather than to simply document things unconsciously. This also means that gearfaggotry is pointless; work with what you have and make weird and unusual photos. The camera is just a “black box” with certain technical limitations, and any camera can be manipulated to create novel photographs. The snapshitter, Flusser says, seeks purely to document what they see. They consider photographs to be real representations, and not symbolic amalgamations. This includes both your average smartphone camera user, who doesn’t even consider the photographic act itself, as well as gearfaggot tryhards on /p/. Their obsession with technical capabilities reflects their desire to simply capture realistic images on more comprehensive ways. Very rarely are they thinking of ways to use advanced technical capacity to create new and novel images, to “play against the camera.”

Yes, he was a philosopher. He’s far more thoughtful about photography than any photographers I know, however. Most people here spend inordinate amounts of time obsessing over technical specifications, but never stop to consider the broader philosophy of photography itself.

That's not really what a snapshitter is. A snapshitter takes no ownership over how they produce an image at all, that's really the essence of snapshotting. Documentary photography has a high skill ceiling and is incredibly valued. Without even seeing any examples of these so-called "artists" (although I can think of some, like Jeff Wall) it sounds like a lot of prattle.

Depth of field, or really any of his essay collections. He was the photography critic for the New York Times (the most important newspaper in the most important and only vital photography city) for many years and has some life-changing insights.

Instead of getting into semantics it's better to take actual situations. When doing something like foreign affairs do you think we should just make statements and use random people that we ask on the street as evidence in our articles or should we wait until we have actual verifiable proof before we start writing things? Also I'm still waiting for answers on the post modern works that's what the whole argument started with.

I do get the appeal of that shit though. In academia there's always hundreds and hundreds of new students every year, and 90% of them are shit (per Sturgeon's law), and so won't be learning e.g. maths, natural sciences, engineering, or medicine, even if studying these things were without debt. So on the other side of the campus we have literature studies, where the student need only parrot the doctrines to get a passing grade, justifiable academically because there's literally nothing else they could even hope to do.

This is not unlike how programming is taught to college-level SEs: dog goes bark, cat goes meow, cow goes moo. This gets the student a passing grade and skills on par with the finest pajeets at graduation, which is good enough for industry, and makes the college look like it doesn't fail quite as many students as others and is therefore better.
