I mean I guess it's not that remarkable. One time had a lady come up to me and start screaming and swearing because she thought I was photographing her but I didn't even see her there until she stormed up. Another time a dude just yelled across the street to "go ahead and put it on fucking snapchat" or something. I even just recently got surrounded by police because my tripod was mistaken for a rifle.

The irony with the first two is that I don't shoot people let alone do street work. And while nothing seriously bad has happened to me yet, all I'm trying to say is people go crazy when their picture is taken without their "permission" even if it's legal. Any of the above situations could have been far worse especially with the cops. If you really want to see how people act look up Surveillance Camera Man on Liveleak.

I used to do street and had a few run ins but not on that level. When I saw this article I instantly thought it was a Ricoh user. With 18mm he had to get up closer ..that usual Im a edgy brave street photographer approach...guess he faced the result of it. Getting in someones face can get you results but expect the consequences,..especially if its intimate. Yeah you have to get REALLY close with a Ricoh GR. I usually leave mine on 35mm crop mode because the 28mm is basically point blank range. But sometimes the wide angle adds something that the crop mode loses.

These people were upset because I waited until Darth Vader lifted his helmet to catch some air and I had to shove my GR pretty close to get the moment. Worth it though.

What he does has no legal grounds, it is harassing. The important difference is that he tracks his subjects, i.e. follows them around.

If he wanted to mimic a surveillance camera, and also stay within his rights, he would randomly film people passing by, or even walk to people, but not follow them the moment they get up and change their position.

He was trying to make a point, but still, what he did was neither legal nor what surveillance cameras (or street photographers) do.

Surveillance is way more intensive than that, the only difference is you can't put a face to it so you don't feel the eyes on you.

And I say that living in the UK where police drive around with CCTV vans and there are more CCTV than in any country. If they want to track you through your entire commute, they can and will. This guy was doing exactly what a CCTV camera does, except people react much differently to a person standing there with a camera. It's an interesting case study on the difference we make in our minds and how accepted surveillance has become.
