What are some reasons not to buy an EOS RP? I genuinely want to find a better alternative, but this seems like the best option so far.

What I need is:
>Full frame
>Compact size
>Lightweight
>EF mount
>Less than $1500

This is pretty much it, isn’t it?
My main gripes with it is the battery life (and battery type, I’d prefer LP-E6) and the dynamic range. Video is no issue as it will be complimentary to a dedicated video camera.

The 50mp 5Ds has been on sale (gray market) for $1,300 on eBay. It's not compact or as lightweight, but the IQ is phenomenal.

If you have to go as compact and lightweight as possible while still being FF EF then the RP is your choice.

You'd probably be better off with even an a7ii or a Fujifilm X-T3/X-H1.

Thing is, I’ll be using adapted EF lenses that I mainly use on my video camera. In looking for a stills camera on the side, I wanted something that would let me share lenses between them, that’s why I’m looking at Canon. My current camera is a Nikon, and I considered keeping it and adapting F lenses to the video camera instead, but F lenses don’t really have good options for adapting and they’re kinda big and expensive anyways.

The sensor is fine as long as you're not pushing shadows 5ev. And face it, none of you faggots do.

It's better at high ISO than the A72 or the Fujis.

Bad is relative. At that point you can buy a second hand 6D for $400 and have the same sensor IQ.

Below 3200 iso speed and downsampled to the same resolution, the noise is pretty comparable to a 6D. Given the price difference and a use casre, the choice is easy, either resolution camera or allround camera.

6D2 sensor is better and the body is far better.

5Ds high iso is excellent. People pixel peep too damn much and pixel peeping 50mp is like putting your nose on an 80” print.

Right now there are 2 Canon full frame options that yield better IQ in terms of noise: the 5D4 and R.
All the other ff sensors are at or below the level of the 6D.
Sure there are better options than a 6D if af fields, flip screen, dualpixel, resolution and other aspects matter. Still, the 6D is very very temting for its price second hand and in mint condition.

You'll probably be surprised how much better the af is on the sony and adapter than sticking with Canon. And the a7iii isn't a gimped pos like the r

The EOS RP is a savagely cuckolded camera.
It's got a slow-ass processor which means the screen lags whenever you start AF, it's got pus battery life, it's got an undersized grip.
No IBIS, basic-ass sensor which just isn't as sharp as any of the standard 24MP offerings from other brands, hilariously bad 4K implementation.
It is cheap though, because it's basically been in clearance since it was released. The new 24-240mm kit is hilarious boomer bait though; we've had them for 3 days and I've already sold 3!

Canon combined the wrong things.

They tried to combine miniaturisation with old tech.
The problem is, people who like miniaturisation are also the people who are enthusiastic about new tech.
And that type of customer is already in the Sony camp.

Canon's camp is the people who like big DSLR looking gear. And this type is more impressed by the Rabals than the RP.

That's why RP is flunking.

The RP, if not R, is a full frame EOS M that's as fast and as stable as an EOS M series, i.e. heavily dropping in price, with experiancable delay and an evf prone to be disiked when the user has experience with bright ovfs.
My best guess is, if you're interested, you'll find cheap ones at the $500 mark at the latest in two years from now.

I'm going to get an RF-mount camera myself but I'm waiting for the RF 70-200. Sony makes slightly better camera's but I choose Canon because I shoot JPEG most of the time and I like Canon JPEGs better.

The 5Ds has comparable noise to the 6D* but is considerably sharper at high ISO. If you don't need the extra sharpness (i.e. printing 8x10) then you can use NR and get an image that has the same sharpness but has considerably less noise.

I would agree, but OP has the budget for an RP which means he probably has the budget for a 5Ds gray market, and he explicitly stated he doesn't care about video. So we're back to...

At the same view size the 5Ds is better at high ISO than the 6D or the 6D2. It's a toss up vs the 5D4 because again the 5Ds is sharper, but it's not sharper by much. On the 5D4 25,600 and even 32,000 are usable for gritty concert style shooting where the 5Ds doesn't have those ISOs. So I would give the nod to the 5D4 but not by a huge margin. "MUH 5DSR NOISY!" meme is just that, a meme.

At high ISO. At low ISO it's much sharper and more detailed than the 5D4. Or pretty much anything other than a D850 or A7r3 or 4, where it's comparable.

I would personally get the 6D2. To me the discount for buying used (and possibly abused) isn't big enough. Plus the 6D2 has some nice feature improvements. That said, the 5D3 has the nicer AF module and probably more robust build for severe weather.

Most of the AF complaints were addressed by the recent firmware update. People are comparing the R and RP to Sony bodies now when it comes to eye and face AF.

The RP renders fine detail better than the A73.

No, AA filters eliminate aliasing artifacts which impact fine detail and sharpness. AA filters themselves introduce some softness, but if you bump the MP a bit you offset that while remaining artifact free.
