i have a canon 600d and just cant justify raising my rates with the current quality of work. Considering going 6D/5Dmkiii but also am being told to just get new glass instead. Been shooting for 5 years with just the t3i, 50mm 1.8 and kit lens. halp

Spend $50 on a used speed light then you’ll get sharper photos. Idk if this guy moved during your 1/40 exposure but it’s certainly an issue with the photo I’m seeing. I only had a 50 1.8 for a year and it’s pretty much the only lens I still use on a FF Nikon. If taking low light photos without a flash is your thing then FF is probably more for you. You’ll probably want an off camera flash bracket too if you go flash route.

Also if you're shooting at f4 for the sharpness, isn't the nifty fifty more or less fine at f2.8?
I'd certainly take pixel peeping loss of sharpness over ugly motion blur.

And the 600D can definitely take ISO 400 without any noise

Posting more of your work in general may be a good start to figure out your issue

definitely need a speedlite, ive been meaning to get one. I wanted to get a canon one i could use off camera, for reliabaility and diverisities sake, im gonna shop around. Any recommendations on the most logical next lens to buy? i appreciate your advice bro

Raise your rates a little bit after a few shoots. When people stop paying you then you know what your work is worth. Get better and save up for better gear. You can still charge with lesser gear. No one will know (or care) you have a 600d if you're turning out good/great photos with it. Also upgrade glass before camera bodies.

But this is the sort of subject matter and aesthetic that people tend to shoot film to get
Maybe get some cheap meme vintage glass to enhance the aesthetic, definitely still a speedlite

a lot of people on instagram with wayyy higher end cameras ask me "What camera do u use???" feelsgoodman. Great thing about instagram is a lot of the flaws and imperfections that stick out to me go unnoticed. Not good for prints/publishing though. Also, about the glass upgrades, i was thinking about switiching to sony so im hesitent to invest in new canon glass. Decisions decisions

Also mentioning you also do video would've been very helpful.
600D is a perfectly capable stills camera, but its video features leave more to be desired.

My opinion here is get a mirrorless camera, Sony works and some vintage glass. Aiming for the sort of aesthetic Mark Holtze on Youtube has. I feel like there's overlap there.

Well you’ve been shooting a 50 for 5 years. Think about what focal length you’ve wished you’ve had the most of in those 5 years. 50 is as standard as it gets so do you find yourself getting closer or further away from your subjects more?

To add to this I forgot to ask what kind of photography are you doing mostly. If it’s portrait a 50 1.8 can work just fine, don’t buy new glass or bodies if they are working for you. You will be shocked at the difference a speed light makes and how much wacky shit you can do with one if you get a remote trigger and a $3 soft box cover for it.
