Nah, anything wider than 28mm is a shit show from old lenses, computers made ultra wides possible and not shit.

If you're on mirrorless, don't get anything old and wider than 50mm, get new shit, the sigma 10-20 is OK if you're on crop and costs fuck all.

10mm is near-impossible for a rectilinear full frame lens even by modern standards.
But if you're fine with fisheyes, the old ones are usually decent. Peleng 8mm is basically a circular fisheye version of that Zenitar.

I've got an EFS 10-18 now and I really enjoy it but the f/4.5 is killing me so I'm looking for something in that range that's faster, even if it's not that wide, like I might try find a second hand Rokinon 14mm

There's an f2.8 28mm Yashica on there. Fairly expensive at 129$
It's C/Y mount though, but adapters are cheap

That's a tough one, soft edges aren't a big deal for portraiture but at 24mm you're not doing that, maybe some environmental stuff but even then it could work. For anything architectural or landscape it's a dealbreaker though.

Venus Optics has a 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 zoom (E- and Z-mounts) and Samyang has an EF-mount 10mm f/3.5 (F-mount planned).
All of them are rectilinear but those are modern lenses, not cheap vintage ones like OP was looking for.

If you have a crop sensor EF-S camera, just forget about old wide-angle lenses. It simply does not work. With 1.5x focal length multiplier, even rare and expensive ultra-wide primes for film cameras will turn into boring medium-wides with mediocre image quality because you're throwing out 60% of the image they produce.

Look for modern wide-angle lenses specifically designed for crop cameras. There isn't a lot of choice for EF-S, but Sigma makes a 10-20mm f/3.5 if you want super-wide, as well as a bunch of fast zooms starting from 17-18mm if you want medium-wide.

Not possible. You need a 24/1.6 = 15mm lens for that; non-fisheye lenses this wide were pretty much non-existent before the computer era. Several 18mm ones exist, e.g. Olympus OM 18/3.5, but they aren't gonna be faster or noticeably better quality than your most basic kit lens, and you'll be frustrated by flare and lack of autofocus.

I used to own the tokina but after using it in a ff body, I realized how soft it is in the corner even on bigger apeture. Later i bought a 50$ sigma 15-30mm f3.5-4.5 SA mount and converted it to EF and it was much more sharper than tokina on ff and i never used the tokina ever again.

In M42, the best 35mm I own and can testify is best is the Carl Zeiss Skoparex 35mm f3.4.
In M mount, the Minolta 40mm f/2 is bang for bucks (but has poor corner sharpness).
In K-mount, the Pentax-A 35mm f/2 is a wonderful (underrated?) lens.

Not knowing how to use a slide rule. Actually you can, and people have known how specific lens curvatures affect light. Not only how it affects the path, but what types of glass cancel chroma from other types, and using the curves to cancel it out as well. Then there is spacing of the elements. The problem is manufacturer hacks are lazy. All the computers have done is make the process something any hack can do.

Not that at all. Fuck the slide rule, they had proper, phonebook sized books with multiplication tables (in log form, like the slide rule), with many decimals of precision. Those huge books filled with such tables was a staple of any advanced engineering workshop.

The problem is the sheer amount of work and calculations. You could have a proper 50people team working 8hours/day for a couple years just churning out calculations. That's what got automated. The genius in that era was having the correct intuition when making design choices, so you don't end up wasting a couple months of manhours of calculations on something that's a deadend.

It's not about being talentless and lazy. Because even with all the correct decisions and infallible intuition, you still need countless manhours to verify/calculate higher order aberrations in a 8-10 element lens.

In my experience, that one stop of light you can gain with an old 28/2.8 over the kit lens isn't worth the numerous drawbacks, and faster ones tend to be pricey. And since you can buy a new manual 25/1.8 for m43 for $80, what's the point?
