I wonder if that wasn't abandoned because Nikon figured their design wouldn't be all that competitive with other MF cameras.
Complex glass formulas don't matter all that much for MF and I guess the one thing Nikon's known for (building rock solid cameras) might have ended in that camera being ridiculously heavy.
Combine that with a relatively small and shrinking market and I can see why Nikon didn't bother.
