sony a7ii vs canon RP... which would you choose? Which do you think has the better sensor?

I currently have a canon 200d (crop with mirror), looking for a upgrade. I shoot mainly on vintage lenses (but new AF canon lenses too)- street, aeroplanes and portrait - might wanna do simple video for youtube too (4k prob not important).

My assessment:
a7ii - PROS: image stabilization, better sensor?, a different company to try out
NEGS: no touch screen

RP - PROS: better menu and interface?, newer, better and cheaper adapter to canon AF lenses, 4k video (eventhough i prob wont us this)
NEG: worse sensor?, no image stablisation

RP - Better kit lenses and much better evf. If you plan on using a lot of old mf lenses, evf is pretty important.
A7 - Larger lens lineup. Every major 3rd party manual lens manufacturer makes lenses for e mount already.

Don't choose based on the sensor. Though I'll discuss sensor differences below, sensor differences within a format are practically a meme. Choose the SYSTEM you want to be in: lenses, accessories, ergonomics, etc.

IBIS is definitely a big plus if you're going to shoot vintage glass.

Resolution: roughly the same.
Sharpness: roughly the same despite the AA filter on the RP because of the slight MP bump. So the RP is sharp without aliasing.
High ISO: RP. The A72 is rather poor at high ISO for a FF sensor.
Base ISO DR: A72. The RP is rather poor at base ISO DR for a FF sensor.

So unless you place a lot of importance on base ISO DR, I would rank the RP sensor as better.

i have seen a review that shows a72 at high iso is noisey..

i usually try to keep the ISO low as possible. And i think IBIS will allow for longer shutter speeds to offset the need for higher ISO.

DR and '3d-ness' is important to me as well.

But I also like that the RP has silent shutter.

Almost exclusively vintage.. main drive for mirrorless is so that I can use different types of quality vintage that wont work on mirrored. But in the back of my mind i always think, maybe i will need AF in the future - and canon EF has the best priced lenses for this.

You can do probably focus peaking in live view with magic lantern on the 200D
Though that's not particularly practical for street

FD lenses are tempting as hell though and there's just soooo many of them so I perfectly understand.
I shoot with a 100D and am trying to get into vintage stuff myself. Most places are full of FD gear and comparatively little in terms of actually adaptable mounts

This one is fairly huge factor.
Especially Voigtlander has found their niche in e-mount: https://www.voigtlaender.de/lenses/e-mount/?lang=en
They produce even more lenses than Zeiss these days.

There is nothing more enraging than picking a mount, and watch from the sideline as all the best 3rd parties release lenses for the other mount.
I've been there and done that. Never again.

One of the problems with DxO is that nobody can visualize how their measurements translate to the real world. I would call the difference significant but not huge.

That said, if OP is going with mostly vintage glass then IBIS out weighs this. Sony is probably the best choice for an adapted vintage glass shooter.

Not a7ii, it's evf is crap. The one in iii is better, but not even close to the new ones in last gen of mirrorless. In s1/7z/r you can easily focus by viewfinder alone even in dark situations. No focusing helpers needed at all.
Seen them all in store, Panasonic has the best one by far, needs to be seen to believe. You can see focus lines on far away objects that are impossible to see with slr prisms. Then it's Nikon, still amazing, shortly behind is R then RP. S1 is massive, though. Both in size and weight.

I own an A7iii and already played with both Canon R and RP.

Go for the RP, much better focus than the A7ii

It`s a completely different story if you compared it to the A7iii, but the A7ii has slow autofocus, terrible batery life, is way too fragile even for my standards (studio photography and ocasional events)

The only advantage I see on the sony side is much better dynamic range, but coming from a 200D, both will be an upgrade.

No. The evf in the a7ii is sharp enough, it’s the lens that’s the issue. With the sharper e-mount lens (mostly the primes), you can see moire on the object that’s in focus.

It's a cheap FF stills camera with good still image IQ. If you do 1080p vlogging it's nice for that. Don't expect to use it for serious 4k work unless you enjoy a challenge, not because of IQ but because of crop factor and AF.

DR is highest possible light contrast, usually done in a lab with as little variable as possible.
SNR is based on output of your camera. Even if you have huge DR of 1:10 000 000 000 you can still shoot with SnR lower than 1. DR and SNR aren't the same thing and never will be.

DR is about Contrast between highest and lowest values. I don't care how you think you get best range on your photo it's not about that. It's about what DR.

This is factually not true, DR is measured in Ration, Decibels or Stops. Stops make more sense for Photo/Video. Decibles make more sense for Audio and Ration makes more sense for output devices. But all of them represent the same thing, a dynamic range, a ration between highest and lowest point.
