>>3557270The 5Ds/sr are phenomenal cameras. I bought my 5Ds gray market from an eBay dealer with a good score and their own 1yr warranty (just in case Canon were to refuse warranty work because of gray market). At the time I paid $2k but they are now down to $1,500 and even $1,300 on sale. Canon always steeply discounted these cameras in Asia, and they've dropped further with everyone anticipating a future 83mp R.
I immediately fell in love with the IQ. 5Ds files have so much fine detail that they feel like MF digital files.
Pros
* MF like sharpness and fine detail. I'm not saying it's every bit as good, but the RAWs are not out of place sitting in a folder next to Credo 80 files.
* Very good high ISO, which shocked me because so many reviewers claimed the opposite. IQ through ISO 3200 is excellent, and even at 3200 the sharpness/fine detail still feels MF-like and supports massive prints. 6400 is quite good and 12800 is usable in a pinch.
* Canon colors.
* Canon ergonomics and build quality.
* Excellent AF module from the 1DX.
* Silent shutter mode. (Not mirrorless e-shutter quiet but pretty quiet.)
* Did I mention the IQ?
Cons
* Limited DR. You can only push shadows about 3ev where on a Nikon D850 you would be good to at least 5ev if not 6. As a practical matter I don't find this limiting even with landscapes, though I'm sure I sometimes shoot and blend two exp where a Nikon user might only shoot one.
* "Only" 5 fps. I put that in quotes because I've shot much faster cameras and honestly, 5 fps is fine for sports and wildlife.
* Battery life is less than other DSLRs, though still better than mirrorless.
* You need to hone your technique with this camera. It will show the slightest motion blur or AF error. One the plus side, diffraction is not the issue so many talking heads make it out to be. You don't want f/22, but f/11 is fine and f/16 usable.
* Limited movie support. The 1080p footage is actually decent. But the video AF is horrendous.
