If you could start from scratch, really from the beginning: what camera would you get? What system?

Analog or digital? DSLR or mirrorless? Instant or 4x5?

Some months ago I sold all of my photography equipment to escape the massive gearfaggotry that had infested me. After using my only left camera, a D40, I think I can get a new cam again. But where to start? I’m a bit lost.

What would you do, if you could start again?

I'm anything but invested into gearfaggotry, just an entry Canon DSLR and kit lenses.

But if I were to start over I'd just get an older FF body and a nifty fifty and I'd spend the rest on a good tripod instead of cheaping out on that.

In general the things I feel are missing from my life right now is weather sealing on my glass/camera, a decent tripod and maybe IBIS if I ever decide to invest in vintage glass.

I'd sell all my gear and get a Ricoh GR III, use the money earned to go on a trip abroad. I'm already thinking of doing it now. I keep around so much gear all for little reasons and I'm not sure why when I only really love my GR.

Thinking of selling my bodies and getting a D4. I don’t want a bajillion megapixels but I want that “pro body” with all the buttons laid out (I HATE MENU DIVING) and low light performance. I really only use 3 lenses and out of those 3 I use the 50mm the most.

Lens designs and optic materials will improve. Sensors will get less noisier, sizes will change, microlens arrays will be refined. ADC/DACs will improve, image processors will get faster. Motors will get faster, less noisier.

Blah blah blah blah.

Gear is both a tool and a distraction. At the end of the day you need to capture a moment, or write something with light.

Thus the best camera is one which is the shortest distance between intent and execution.

For most of the world this is a phone in your pocket. For me, right now, it's a Fujifilm X-H1, because I just want nice compact glass and I don't want to lug around heavy and expensive FF/MF glass. I like the immediacy of Fujifilm, and love the colours and images SOOC. Life is too short to spend so long dicking around in lighroom or capture one.

if you like street photography then yes definitely. if you want to vblog some sports then no

Used to be state of the art. Limitations are how and where you grow as a photographer. Having insane gear only seems to make sense if you're cosplaying a museum archivist.

I don't even yearn for new gear particularly, what I have exceeds my capabilities as a photographer. I am just thinking what I would do if some of my gear broke. I don't want to spend any more money on the A-mount platform, unless Sony does a 180° and starts supporting it again. I like twiddly knobs and tactile controls, and don't like surfing menus/touchscreen interface. I'd like to be able to control all the essentials while looking through an EVF, my camera does this OK, can adjust everything with buttons and the wheel. I would probably go and test drive all the mirrorless offerings and buy purely based on ergonomics. I think all the shitposting on here immensely overplays differences in capabilities and even the "worst" new camera is "good enough" for most use cases
