I took about 300 photos yesterday. About 90 percent turned out soft or just slightly out of focus. I am using a 5dIII, a 24-70 f 2.8 with UV filter. Pic related. What the hell am I doing wrong?

Image was Autofocus, Aperture Priority, f2.8, 1/3200, ISO 400.

Focusing mode?

The only way to check if your camera/lens is focusing correctly is by shooting static objects on single spot autofocus.

If the problem persists try another lens. If it's still there it's the camera, otherwise it's the lens that needs to be calibrated.
I don't know canon dslrs but the 5D probably has an option to fine tune autofocus, do some research and use it.

Anyway, all of the stated above only applies if you know what you are doing or are willing to learn about the exposure triangle and how it affects the pictures. Shooting that photo with a 3000€ equipment, at f2.8, with a fucking wall right behind the subject tells three things:

You're a moron
You are lazy/uninterested in learning anything that takes more than a youtube 3min tutorial
You have more money than brains

Now go learn how to camera or become another worthless gearfag whose pictures are shit, but taken with fancy equipment.

there is literally zero reasons to snap at 2.8 with 1/8000 shutter...every lens in existence, even fucking Master Primes do perform better a coupl of stops closed down

These people are imbeciles, UV filter as a protective element isn't a bad thing just don't use the cheap ones, I've had 2000 dollar lenses saved because I had a 20 dollar second-hand UV on them.

These are soft. I suspect that there maybe something wrong the lens. It's the bubble picture that leads to this suspicion as nothing is really in focus. With such a wide range of distances and none of them really looking sharp it seems doubtful that the camera is miss focusing. Unless there's something hideously wrong with the UV filter or you used crisco to clean your glass that shouldn't be the cause either.

Well used 24-70i are known to get some barrel wobble. Abused ones would also de-center from being placed lens down too hard too often. Does the barrel have any give up/down side/side when fully extended? Retract the lens and point it straight down. Does it slowly extend? These would be worrying signs.

Your best bet is run a few tests. Start by eliminating as many possible blurring variables as you can. Place your camera on tripod, turn on the self timer, turn on mirror lockup. Remove the UV filter and clean the lens. Set your camera to iso 100 and take a series of pictures at f2.8 f8 and f16 (vary the shutter as needed) of a static subject. Then report back.

Also ignore all of the negativity in the thread. Automodes are fine as long as they are intentional. Av and Tv modes are important and used by professionals all of the time. That said with the shutter speeds you were getting ISO 100 would've been fine. A general rule of thumb is 1/focal length -ish is the slowest you can hand hold a shot with good form of a static subject. Moving subjects generally should be shot at 1/125 and faster, quickly moving subjects in 1/2000 range. ISO should be shot as low possible and is the last to be adjustment up. As you increase ISO you increase image noise, decrease sharpness, and limit dynamic range.

I used a 5Dii and 24-70i for years. My images would come out sharper than these.

On the two I posted, I was using Auto. On AP, I use point but sometimes with moving subjects I forget to move the point over the subject. I am looking at Sony....does the eye focus make things easier?

The following images were a test of the Canon 5dIII, 24-70mm f 2.8, no filter, tripod, mirror lock, updated firmware, factory reset of all settings. Auto focus point is at cat nose, remote trigger.

Before you send it in:

>if the autofocus pulls the image out of focus, something is wrong with the camera
You can micro-adjust the autofocus in the settings, but if you've mounted a current, native lens, you really shouldn't have to.
