Because Sigma isn't known for making video cameras, they're known for making the wacky Foveon cameras and this isn't a Foveon so it's well under the radar

Hmm, haven’t heard of this but looks interesting. CDNG is a surprise. I don’t really see much point getting this over the P4K apart from stills capability and maybe body size - I guess if you want a run and gun doc camera and require CDNG and stills capability but that’s quite a niche use case. Also L Mount is a literal who.

It has a massive 1.5x 4k crop putting it on par with Super35/APS-C cameras. They would've been smarter to use an APS-C sensor but they wanted the bragging rights of the smallest full frame camera.

a lot of "full frame" mirrorless and DSLR cameras are cropping their 4K video. Most notably Canon does this is the EOS R series and 1DX ii. Cameras in that tier have a hard time downsampling the full sensor readout so they opt to crop a portion of the sensor (punching into the image) and then delivering a 4k output stream from there.

So what? It's still full frame. And it's not that you can get complete package anywhere unless you start investing into s1h or c200. It's very capable ff cine cam, and it fits perfectly into a market share with blackmagics and gh5's out there.

Image samples that I've seen look very spartan so far. Not sure if it's lack of mechanical shutter, or if there's something else going on, but it does not look like an efficient stills camera.

I know it's not meant to be, but I was mildly hopping it'll turn out as a decent performer for small kits.

Ken Wheeler called this camera a "house cat". It's very slow, needs to be mounted to prevent shutter recoil, has non-existent weatherproofing, and in general is something that wouldn't leave the studios. Unless you're going to lug it around like an LF setup, then hard pass.

Processing power. Camera chips are far, far slower to incorporate advances in SoCs (that are mostly propelled by phones).
If I remember correctly, the digic 8 is just a dual core Cortex A-9 (so 32bit), in god knows what node size (probably larger than 14nm) and frequency.
Meanwhile, phones are pushing quadcores in 64bit at 7nm (the smaller the node, the higher the efficiency).

In all fairness, camera chips incorporate asic accelerators for signal processing. But the point remains, that they are very neglected in terms of using current generation nodes and instruction sets.
