Do you guys mainly photograph for the enjoyment at the time of photographing or enjoying the results once you get home and review them?

Would you rather not enjoy photography but get photos you love or love the process of photography but only get nasty shit shots?

I’m fundamentally breaking why I enjoy photography and whether it’s a valid art form or not in my context. Your opinions are very welcome to help me reflect.

Sorry that this isn’t a gear thread. Fuck micro four thirds amirite?

For me, I think, the trick is to enjoy both the process and the result. Taking photos should be an enjoyable experience that doesn't give you a lot of anxiety and doubt. I have to remind myself to put myself back into that perspective of "holy shit my mom let me borrow her camera! what should I go shoot?" that I had when I was a kid, or the process becomes too burdened with self-awareness and doubt. Likewise, I have to remember to separate the photo from the day, and I often find myself going back to old photos where I totally forgot the day surrounding its creation and enjoying them more as a result.

The thing that really excites me after 20 years of being bad at photography is that initial kernel of inspiration that happens LONG before I even touch the camera. If you work really long and hard at a core concept or theme for a set of photos, there will be a tipping point where suddenly everything makes sense and you know exactly how to make the photos you want to express the idea you have inside your head. That eureka moment is really exciting and is what keeps me going, but you have to grind for a while on a single concept to get to that point.

I think that’s why I’m questioning my “art”. I don’t have a pre conceived idea of what I’m intending to create. Photography to me is pretty much luck and opportunity.

Personally I think the toss up between experience and results is the blend between the two. Currently I manually focus and set aperture to try and feel more involved in the process and feel more depth.

I would suggest some photo exercises so you aren't just walking around like Scarlett Johannason in Lost in Translation, doe-eyed and clueless. For instance, spend a week or two shooting people you see who wear blue sweaters. Do posed street portraits of people with glasses. Find a common typology and explore it.

I once embarked upon a massive project that took up about a year where I shot different suburban houses that were identical models, sort of a riff on the Bechers. You could do something similar.

You could do technical exercises too, where you shoot at a fixed shutter speed, aperture and ISO, say 1/60, f/16 and ISO 400. You end up finding your light, rather than adjusting your camera.

Spend an hour making a single photo. Could be a still life, could be a busy street corner where you sit and wait for the right opportunity.

Try to think about your photos before you go take them. The creative process starts long before you touch a camera.

Love the process and get shitty shots. Why would I even take shots if I'm not enjoying it? It's not like my profession anyway. It's been months since my last good shot and I'm still here with my fucked up camera.
Kinda hurts to see results and say "oh, this would be a pretty good shot if it was in focus and without the yellow tint" every time tho

I don't set out with the idea to create art. It's the subject that interests me and that is what I aim to explore. The camera is merely one of the tools I use. Sometimes the results are a bit arty other times they are straight documentation. Usually a bit of a mix for each project.

100% rather get shit shots. I have only recently got a few shots where I was like wow, I actually really like this. It's the enjoyment of the process that draws me in to go out and shoot. Having nice pictures feels good, but not as good as actually going out and shooting. Especially since having pictures you like doesn't actually translate in anybody else wanting to see them, even if they're something lots of people would consider good. That's just the nature of the oversaturated photography world.

Sadly, I can't shoot raw. My phone doesn't supports it (without root)
I can't even search for solutions because I don't know the cause. Sometimes it works kinda okay like pic related, sometimes it's totally blurry and yellow...

Oh, well realistically you wouldn't see a benefit using your phone because it isn't a real camera anyway. Just get a real camera, you need to get a real camera to take serious pictures.

I don't think so. The shot itself is almost everything that matters. I experimented with my dads D7100 for a while (dunno if it counts as a real camera by /p/ standards tho) and they were all shit shots despite having nice quality.
On the other hand, my shitty phone took some nice ones...

I live in a shithole where getting money is hard, everything is overpriced and used gear sales are scams.
I could work two months for a EOS 2000D (just a random choice from price) but I'm busy 6 days a week...

I can enjoy both, and I can hate both. Depends on mood and work. What I don't necessarily like about photography is constantly looking around for photoops. At times, I'll be too desperate to take a good batch, and have a bad time because of it.

Both. If I didn't enjoy the process of going out to a location I've scouted out or just found and started exploring, I wouldn't do it. I do push myself to get a photograph I'm fond of but I don't beat myself up if it doesn't work out.

I love wandering around my city noticing new things because I’m now looking around for shots. I actually found the photography has taught me to look up and appreciate the (corniness earning) beauty/quirkiness in the world.

Start a project. Learn how to use InDesign or the book module in Lightroom then aim to make a book every few months. Or keep it to pages on a website if you can't be bothered printing.

The act of editing photos to place them in a collected form makes you consider things like narrative, print sizes, layouts, and you learn a ton about paper stocks and how photos look when printed. It's worth doing.

Theres an anon here who goes by fultron12 and he lives in the middle of nowhere. He still takes some decent photos. Hell, look at what Alex burke shoots in the middle of nowhere. I find myself driving out into nowhere from the city to take photos myself sometimes, actually. You've got to have some old grain silos or other industry where you are at least, there can't literally be "nothing".
