What are Black Friday deals like for cameras?

I'm planning on buying a new camera soon. I'm looking at a point-and-shoot, something like

(big sensor + good zoom for wildlife). What are Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals usually like for point-and-shoot cameras like that? Should I wait in line to buy in-store or will there be good deals online?

Also is there a certain time of year that new cameras usually come out? Is there anyplace I can look to get an idea of what new cameras are expected or what specs/features people expect to see in new cameras?

well I guess it's relative. I want a compact point-and-shoot, and the ones with better zooms all have a 1/2.3" sensor (which I think is about the same as most cell phones). I don't think they make compacts with better than 1" sensors, and the other compacts with 1" have 3x-5x zoom. The only one better than the ZS100 is the upgraded ZS200 which has the 1" sensor and a 15x zoom, but it's like $750. If it comes down enough for Black Friday I might get that one though, but it would have to come down to like $500.

The ZS100 isn't worth it. It's for people who don't know a single thing about cameras. I'd advise you avoid Black Friday deals and start looking into the used/refurb market. Aim for a full frame or APS-C camera if possible otherwise the jump in quality won't be much greater than using your phone. Point and shoots are becoming extremely obsolete for a reason outside of premium compacts like Fuji X100 or Ricoh GR.

There are APS-C compacts. There is no point dropping money on a 1" sensor compact with a gigazoom for wildlife.

Get a compact APS-C camera and a cheap 55-210 or close to that zoom. Fuji make one. Sony make one. Canon make one. Nikon make one. It won't have grotesque digital zoom artifacting and shit low light/subject separation like the ZS100. Stop being stupid about your camera purchases, a fool and their money is easily parted but you're already ahead of the curve asking here first.

Weird it's almost like the needs of OP don't match the compact category. So it's either buy a bigger camera or fuck off with the hopes of getting into Nat Geo. There are plenty of small cameras with APS-C you knuckle dragger.

Those 1" compacts are garbage, the quality falls to shit the second you zoom in and they often lack stabilisation. Anybody turning up to a safari with one of those is already earmarked as an idiot. A quality zoom lens just doesn't fit into a compact. It's hard enough to make a good zoom lens at full size. Luckily all the major camera companies make cheap affordable image stabilised zooms. And they're not all that big or cumbersome.

Ignore the advice all you want, it's your money.

They're not at all that bad. Lens is half decent, even at full range, and it's a compact camera. If he wants a compact, it's a very good choice. Definitely better than bridge cams.

OP here. I don't need to get into Nat Geo. I'm not a pro and don't have any desire to be a pro, I just want a decent camera to take hiking. I'd prefer a compact point/shoot but would consider a bridge camera if necessary. Not gonna go with DSLR because honestly like I said I'm not looking for professional pics.
That said, how is the quality of the ZS100/200 compared to say a modern smartphone? Would it be a step up in terms of low-light (dawn/dusk) pics? It doesn't need to be great, just sightly better than a smartphone.
As for zoom, am I correct in assuming that a 10x optical + 1" sensor could give at least as good of a shot as 20x optical but with a 1/2.3" sensor? The bigger sensor would give better quality, so I could just digitally zoom it afterward right?

That said while I don't need professional pics I don't want trash pics either, so will it be trash or just not something on par with elite DSLR cams?

It'll be decent. zs100 is 25-250mm equivilent. zs200 is 24-360mm equivalent. You can basically look up any samples for 250mm full frame lens, it's the the same kind of zoom it'll give you. Now, this is not a lot for inch sensor camera. Good for some smaller animals up to ten meters from you, going further back will be too small. It's also correct that zoom lenses on these cams tend to soften up on the max magnification side. zs100 is also just f/2.8–5.9. That means it'll not be very good in low light, but having inch sized sensor, it'll still give you a bit of bokeh to play around. zs200 will be even worse at 3.3-6.4. Both are also shootthing raw, good for getting e most out of the sensor, and playing with editing. If you go for it, make sure that you buy few extra batteries. Pnshoot cams are very power-hungry, zoom is operated by ele motors, and batteries aren't high capacity to start with.

This is not true. Digital zoom is nonsense. 1/2.3 sensors is so much smaller that quality wise it's not smart going for it unless lenses are so much better. Only case that I know of are Nikon p1000/p600 cams, they're 1/2.3', but they will give better image quality at zoom than what you'll get, because of better lenses. It will be too weak on normal ranges, and will practically give you no depth of field on shorter ranges.

Can you consider a decent camera instead? I swear to God nobody buys these compacts or bridge cameras except dentist boomers. Get yourself a half decent APS-C mirrorless body + a stabilised zoom lens from whatever brand you want. Otherwise you may as well use your phone. We aren't giving you this advice to be elitists. Settling for shit gear because you're "not a pro" is nonsense. Very few of us are pros either but we prefer to not part with cash unless the gear is worth it.

If he wants compact, he wants compact. No idea why you're shilling apsc on him that will cost him a grand, and be larger than a bridge cam for marginally better image quality.

Let's face it, this is you pretending to be anon. Nobody else would be dumb enough to defend bridge cameras also known as phone cameras shoved in a camera shaped box.

APS-C doesn't cost a grand. A Fuji X-E1 is plenty of camera and it's barely £100-120 now. Same with a Sony Nex 6 or a Canon M. Canon and Nikon crop DSLRs are <£100 now.

A Fuji XC 50-230 is about £100 new on the grey market here in the UK. A Sony 50-210 is thrown in with every other kit. Just because you rely on Black Friday sales at the local Costco doesn't mean there aren't *real* deals to be had outside of brick and mortar. That's not even considering how cheap a decent DSLR is. A Canon SL2 is compact as fuck when paired with a pancake lens with some excellent budget zoom lenses.

If you think a mirrorless is ">marginally better" image quality than a bridge camera then I don't know what to tell you. Even a micro four thirds sensor dwarfs a bridge camera sensor. The image quality you get out of a DSLR or mirrorless from 2011 will destroy any 1" compact made in 2019. Sensor size + half decent budget zoom lens = incredible photos. But honestly I'm done trying to persuade you, if you truly believe bridge cameras of all things come close to an APS-C camera then all the power to you. I was that clueless about photography once too and have a drawer full of Nikon P&S cameras to prove it. Knock yourself out.

At the lowest end you're looking at some panalympus with 300mm to get you significant improvement over pointandshoot, and that's 1000$ minimum. Going apsc will be even larger and heavier. Pnshoots will give you something close for half it's price, and it'll be pocketable.
And it's not a bad cam anyway. Leica puts red badge on zs200 and sells it for a grand.
Personally I'd go lx100 for even larger sensor, and must faster lens, but I'd not be looking for reach.
