people used to have their first portrait once they were dead. or when someone died. or lose limbs in the war. major events. so they always carried intensity. nowadays people live mediocre safe lives and take portraits everyday to the most unimportant people, of course they come off as void of value and meaning.

They are all good, the brand is the model. These pics are good for social media and super easy to take, unless the photog is being pretentious then I dont see a problem with it.

Having taken a lot of portraits I am of the opinion that posed static portraits are shit now. They are played out. Your subject needs to be moving, in activity, dancing

Because portraits have turned into fast fashion. They are treating photographers like an easy cheap forever21 outfit, and so many "photographers" are too willing to do cheap or free work. So they all just be themselves that it's good, shit has become the new standard.

top row is complete cringe.
a good way to spot a bad portrait is to check the background - if it's too busy and part of the shot then the portrait is trash / cope for not knowing how to properly shoot the subject.

This, humans are extremely skilled at picking up other humans' emotions. The more a photo has been set up and staged, the harder it is to get a good portrait.

We're always drawn to authenticity which is why I absolutely despise staged photos meant to look natural. See literally any street in SOHO, Manhattan for cringy people doing back and forth fake steps for photos.

People are trying to mediate the unmediated.

In most cases, yes. Typically a tight crop ought to be around the subject. Why focus the viewer elsewhere? Background literally means background, opposed to foreground. Too many shooters try to compensate by moving to an interesting location (it becomes a crutch).

One bad photo doesn't mean that "most photos that incorporate the background are shit". And really, you're just quibbling with technique, and not the actual fucking photo.

Apply yourself, try harder. For every amateur photo you pull off /p/, I could find 10 or 20 good environmental portraits.
