I've tried asking people if I could photograph them but they usually say no, so now I don't say anything unless they confront me. I just started experimenting with flash so I get yelled at a lot.

If someone gets mad I just say sorry and keep walking, or I pretend I was taking a picture of something else. Right now I'm using a Fuji EF-X8 flash which came with my camera, but I'd like to get an off-camera flash with a better recycle time.

I also thought to buy an obnoxious photography vest from a thrift store, like the one he has in your vid, so people can think "oh he is weird but he must be a photographer"
Have you checked any flashes? I asked in the gear thread but couldn't go beyond "the one you have with you" meme.
