Hey, so is there a point to having a low end sale anymore?

I have an 1100d aka rebel t3 with the kit, ef-s 24mm f/2.8 pancake, and a 50mm f/1.8

And when I take it around trips....my wife's iPhone 11 really beats the shit out of it in quality.

Also it's easier to upload to Instagram with the phone, crop and add filters without a Lightroom or Photoshop license.

The iPhone 11 has 3 different lenses, and a large sensor.

It also has software post processing known as smartphoto.

So it digitally alters the photo adding in high dynamic range, blurring to mimic bokeh/shallow depth of field and can even stich focus points of 3 seperate pictures from three different focal lengths together.

Yes you can her with a DSLR, tripod, +1 and -1 exposures, and swap three different lenses at once but that is a lot of post processing.

Additionally, resolution, the photo an iPhone 11 pro spits out is 4k.

My 1100d, can't even shoot video at 720p

The argument is the "DSLR is bigger and lenses are selectable"

But the iPhone has ai machine learning in it ...

If you don't want to edit your own photos try Fujifilm which has in-camera film simulations. But if you want simulated depth of field just use iPhone.

Phones process the fuck out of the shots they take. If you had decent editing skills and took the same shot with both the phone and the camera, the camera shot would end up looking better 100% of the time.

A DSLR offers more than just 3 lenses and has a much larger sensor, the three usual formats are M43, APS-C and FF.
All of wich are multiple times as large as a phones sensor.

All of that can be done to DSLR pictures as well.

That's not post processing and swaping 3 lenses is never required for one pic.
One can take different exposures with one lens or directly use the .RAW image for tone mapping, also known as HDR.

4k isn't that much of a resolution for a photo, 3840 x 2160 is 4k and my dated entry level DSLR does 6000x4000.

You can continue the phone is better than milc and aps-c, and your autistic pixel wanking.
The truth is: the phones contain very very clever tricks to do a lot more with those tiny sensors than they could half a decade ago. A lot of that is done by clever software. The MILC have far larger sensors still, and APS-C has even larger, so with the same tricks those could make even better pictures. The sad news is: you don't get weekly software updates for your MILC/DSLR, and its software is far less advanced than those in the smartphones. You need to manually recreate the tricks with PhotoShop, which are precanned in smartphones.

So are smartphones better? Depends on hte target audiance. They are pretty good now, and for an average non-autistic citizen they fit most usecases, even the cheaper chink ones. But if you are a professional photographer, and know what you are doing, and not targetting instagram, but magazines or posters, then you most likely need something with larger sensors, and manual postprocessing.

What I'm always wondering is that the human eye is not very large, and its sensor is also pretty small. When will photography reach the same versatility, in mobile-phone camera size. It must be possible, as humans can see in the dark, etc... The Google Pixel night photos are impressive, but if you read the article you'll notice that the exposure times are long, clever stacking is used, etc., so still not mathing the bare eye in sensitivity.

Stacking multiple exposures has been a thing in astrophotography for a long time and can be done with DSLR/mirrorless with no issues.
However that trick only realy works when the scene isn't moving much, meaning it works great for landscape/astro but sucks for dynamic scenes.
If the scene you want to capture is gone, it's gone.

you are right, but nowadays the phones analyze the images much like compressing video, and can stack moving parts separately.

The whole stuff is hacks and magic, but the output is pretty good most of the time, given it works automagically. That's what the linked articles are about.

I hope sometime these innovations will find their way to dedicated cameras too. Having full control is good, but also having lot of help is also good. It's about the choice, and the situation.
