What is the bes sub 250$ body for manual lenses I can get...

...I want to get some used DSLR or mirrorless body with at least APS-C sized sensor.

I have only two conditions:
- 250$ max
- fit M42 manual lenses with an adapter without lens (distance adapter)

I want to shoot everything and will end up getting more gear. If I get small gear I will do more street photography, if I get bulky camera I will do landscape, portraits, stills and macro... But what to get first?

I'm going to preface this with the following: if I were you I would probably lean towards a mirrorless body with EVF and focusing aids since it will make manual focus faster and more accurate. That said...

M42 will mount to EF (no lens in adapter) and if you shop around you can find the FF Canon 5D for $250. Any mirrorless options you look at will be aps-c.

I'll add this because apparently some lenses can't be used adapted to the 5D (they hit the mirror when focused at infinity). Others are fine (they clear the mirror).

5D is a good body, but no live-view is a deal breaker for adapting lenses.

My guess would be a Canon EOS M100 (second hand) + a LCD viewfinder.
Avoid every m4/3 cameras.

how so? m42 is exactly what i bought mine for. it has the right flange distance, decent focus peaking, wysiwyg evf...

Adapt the m42 lenses to you phone. It will give you a crop factor of about 7 but you won't have to buy any obsolete gear.

Thank you for your throughout contribution. The Canon 5D Mark II might fit the bill indeed. I remember having read about the lens preventing the mirror to swing up on some bodies so your link is very helpful. Tinkering is also within my means.

What do you mean with 'no live-view'? It is a DSLR so you view directly through the mirror and can focus like so... Or do you mean, that you have no view and have to 'calculate' how well the image will be exposed?

X-E1's EVF is outdated. I don't use it anymore because the A7II is miles better, and has red and yellow focus peaking. White focus peaking is shit and hardly helping, in my experience.

Pentax K-5 if you want IBIS

Focusing is harder (but far from impossible) than the mirrorless options though.

The focusing screen should be good enough for slower lenses, but you're probably right with fast lenses.

Apparently you can use Nikon FE focusing screens in a 5D:

If you dropped in a Nikon Type K screen with split image aid you would have no trouble at all with manual focus. Canon also made a "super precision" Ee-S screen for the 5D, but it's not available new any more. And it works better with fast lenses (f/2.8 or faster) and worse with slower lenses because it's just a higher precision matte screen that gets too dark on slow lenses. If it was me I would try the Nikon screen.

While I love my original M and do use adapted glass on it, adapted glass is a pain to focus. The only aid in LiveView is magnification. I don't know if they added other focusing aids with the M100. Magic Lantern may be a work around here.

Live-view is an option to feed what your sensor "see" in -almost- real time to the LCD, a la cine camera. For framing subjects on the LCD instead of using the optical viewfinder. The 5D markII has it.

My guess is he thinks it's a deal breaker because of focusing. You can use stop down metering so you don't have to guess at exposure. Canon's default focusing screens are made to be bright, not to offer you maximum assistance with manual focus, because they are AF cameras.

See my post about focusing screens here: >>3579450. Everything I looked up is about the 5D, not the 5D mark II. But if your budget is really $250 then it's the 5D you're looking at. A 5D + Nikon Type K split image screen will let you nail focus every time. The screen won't affect AF but will apparently affect metering by -1ev (which you can dial in +1 EC).

I will have to look into the differences of 5D Mark I and Mark II. Do the split screens that come with the camera differ? LiveView would be nice. And if the sensor is superior I might be willing to pay more.
I've checked the finished auctions and a MkII might be doable.

Pentax K-5 - I always followed those cameras. The distance to the focal plane makes it a good camera to use manual lenses - right?

Honestly I am all set on a FF sensor now. I 'forgot' about the Pentax option to be honest and must check the usual suspect sites to make up my mind. Thanks everybody for now!

Canon EOS cameras don't come with split screen focusing, just typical matte screens. Again since they are AF cameras and MF is considered to be a rare thing.

I don't know what split screen options...if any...are available for the 5D2. The screen shape or size is apparently slightly different because the Canon manufactured screens are not interchangeable between the 5D and 5D2. They have separate versions of each screen for each body.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think these cameras come with split image focusing screens.

The 5D and 6DMk1 do have replaceable focusing screens, though they lack the necessary adjustment functions to properly tune a split image or prism focusing screen. What you can do is replace the focusing screens with Canon's "super precision" focusing screens which exaggerate the depth of field making it easier to focus. They aren't bad.

i do not recommend the 5d kr 6d as some m42 lenses such as the helios m44-2 will hit the mirror when infinity focused. get yourself a mirrorless wifj good focus peaking and focus zoom and all that

If you do go with Pentax, focusing screen replacements on pic related.

Screwmount support with a simple mechanical adapter, flange distance essentially the same. Metering, etc will work with any Pentax.

I use a Fuji X-T1 with adapted M42 lenses every day. Works pretty good and can be had for $250. OP, be aware that there aren’t a lot of wide angle M42 lenses, so for street I use a Neewer 25mm manual lens.

the russian Mir-20M is pretty fun. it has some cazy flaring if you're into that, and no way to prevent it if you're not because you can't screw a hood onto it. not the sharpest lens

the super multicoated takumar 35mm f/2 is outstanding. i love the short focus throw

The only adjustment is to the meter. With a center split image screen, partial and/or spot metering will likely not work. From the report of the guy using a Nikon screen matrix metering was off by 1ev. You can dial that in via EC or try the CFn settings for Canon's screens to see if one is close enough.

AF is not affected because the AF sensor is below the mirror.

I want to adapt this beast to my Sony a6000 or my Canon 40D (which would be easier?). I imagine it would be amazing in low light being a medium format lens because it takes in a fuckload of light. Any tips?
It is a Camerz ZII 100ft film camera. I honestly dont know if the lens is even meant to be taken off. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

The 24mm f3.5 Takumar is fantastic what are you on about? This was shot wide open—not a great picture by any means but it shows the relatively good sharpness you can get from the lens. It's also fairly cheap and can be had for $150 on eBay.

You literally cannot buy that setup cheaper and no other camera will do it, not even my holy grail Nikon Df. Canon EOS flange distance will let you adapt everything but rangefinder lenses and Canon FD and still achieve infinity focus.

In the special case you are not joking here. The lens will perform just like any lens with the same aperture and focal length. The fact that it's a medium format lens means that it also throws an image onto a large area that is not covered by your sensor.
