I just got a Nikon D3500 and it's my first experience with RAW files. The experience is I can't figure out how to open them. I have Photoshop CS6 and my ACR plugin is 9.1.1 but when I try to open the .nef file, it says it can't open it. So I tried using the newest version of the DNG converter but it says it can't start because it's missing MSVCP140.dll. i tried using an older version of the converter, v9.1, and it ran but it didn't recognize the files as being compatible.

d3500 needs at least camera raw 11.1.

Install newer version of camera raw from this site:

I believe it should still work on cs6.

9.1.1 is the last version that was compatible with CS6. You can't use newer versions with it. So I guess that means it's just impossible to use raw images from a d3500 in cs6? I mean I guess it makes sense since the camera is much newer than the program but I wasn't expecting this at all.

There's an old workaround. You can hack your raws so they show later model cam, and they work just as well. Change raw exif so it shows d3300 instead of d3500, and camera raw will open it just fine. Alternative, use free raw editor like rawtherape for initial processing. Save to high bit tiff, then open in photoshop.
