Tried astro once or twice and I'd like to try it again. Any tips on how to do baby's first star trails? Do you guys merge your shots with photoshop layers? And should I generally shoot them with longer exposures to force the motion?

It's called purple fringing - a kind of chromatic aberration. That's pretty extreme though. Usually the jpeg software built into your camera does a pretty good job correcting for it - I've only noticed it when using third party renderers with raws.

You're overcomplicating it. All you need for start trails is really long exposures. I'm talking anywhere from 15-30min. Crank your ISO down and just wait.

Take a class, buy a book, follow an online guide, find something that will take you through the basics of camera operations. The guide should also have you try different kinds of photography (like street, landscape, studio, etc) so you can find what you enjoy.

You will also want to find a community or group of people to share work with. A lot of towns have some sort of photo club an that can be a good place start (though some clubs tend to attract highly opinionated elitists and gate keepers, but what public group doesn't?). You can also try to rely on an online photo community like flickr, 500px, and instagram but each has its own draw backs.

/p/ is not a good place to post and share photos. The amount of trolling and gear bias here has gotten to be problematic.

How the fuck do constant aperture zoom lenses make any sense? I thought aperture is calculated from focal length and aperture opening diameter.
So if you have a lens that's f/4 at 105mm, shouldn't that mean that the aperture can open just as wide (in actual mm) when you're at like 18mm focal length or whatever, making the biggest aperture at that focal length higher than f/4?

Zooming in has the same effect as putting in a magnifying glass between the camera and the lens. It magnifies the image the camera "sees", including the aperture opening. That's why the same size physical opening works as a larger diameter aperture when calculating f-stop.

ISO 200 is the upper limit on Micro Four Thirds because of the phone-sized sensor.
If you want good image quality at higher ISO you should have bought a full frame camera.

When scanning photo prints, even using a profiled scanner with an IT8 target, do you always have to edit them for contrast due to differences in print materials and dyes/inks?

I profiled my scanner in VueScan and things aren't exactly showing as I'd have expected to unless I adjust things like auto contrast stretching or adjusting levels a tiny bit. It's been confusing me for a bit but then I realized the black shit is being illuminated by a super bright LED during the scantime so it's never going to actually be pure black so I guess I have to adjust my images after scanning?

You don't really dodge/burn in Lightroom. It's a misapplication of a term from the darkroom. There are tools in Photoshop that emulate the darkroom technique but not a truly analogous tool in Lightroom.

Dodging/burning is the darkening or brightening of portions of the image by preventing light from striking a photo sensitive paper or allowing light to strike only portions of the image. Ansel Adams was known for good dodging and burning. Here's a short video on it.

In Photoshop there are set of tools that emulate this process. They've been in the program for quite some time. Originally they were used fairly similarly to how they were used in the darkroom. These days they're usually applied to a layer separate from the actual image. The layer's blending mode is then changed to match a desired effect. By putting the dodge/burn into a separate layer it becomes reversible and allows for greater control.

In Lightroom the term is somewhat misapplied to using the adjustment brush to make targeted adjustments that would emulate the effect of dodging and burning. Generally if you're going to be making a lot of targeted adjustments (like dodging and burning a portrait) it would be better to move the file into Photoshop for the greater amount of control that the program allows for.

Shoot a series of test images and judge for yourself what an acceptable amount of noise is in the image for you. Keep in mind in any given image noise will be more prominent in the darker portions of an image. So a shot of a dark and moody cafe will show more noise than a winter day scene even if shot at the same ISO. The internet has strong scurrilous opinions about noise that are not practical or helpful. Choose a shutter speed and aperture the creates the desired effect in your image and then adjust the ISO up as needed. Don't let something as stupid as being afraid of image noise limit you.

Rarely needed, but in few specific cases lightroom/camera raw or any other raw editor is actually more advanced at dodge and burning. Since it works on raw file, you can dodge and burn including specific temperature adjustments.

If that was taken near the north pole, the star it rotates around would be directly above, not close to the horizon.
If it was taken near the south pole, there would be no single star that all others rotate around.
I'd say this was taken around 45-50 degrees of latitude.

Some swear by it, but I personally didn't like the distortion on it at all. It's affordable, but you might grow out of it pretty quick. You could spend a little more and get Sigma's 35 1.4 for $650 or even less than that if you buy used.

I had Sigma's 24/1.4 for a week before I returned it. It was optically great, but just too fucking heavy for what I was using it for. I just saved and got the 24/1.4 gmaster instead and it's never off my camera. I know that's even MORE expensive, but it's a perfect lens for me.

If you're really low on cash I guess you can't really go wrong with the 28/2 with a price like that, but I still think you might not be happy with it in the long run.

The autofocus on the gmaster is perfect on my Rii and Riv, and the Sigma always hunted a lot more, especially in low light which is the reason I bought it in the first place. It's over 200 grams heavier which doesn't sound like a lot, but if you're walking around with it all day it does feel like a strain not only on you but on the camera if you're not supporting it properly.

Some say the Sigma is a tad sharper, but it does have a bit of copy variance because you might get a decentered lens if you're unlucky. The gmaster doesn't have this issue, and I personally like the rendering of the images on the Sony a hell of a lot more.

In the end it's what you're using it for. I do a lot of concert shoots, so I need the reliable AF speed and less overall weight. If you're doing landscapes or general street and don't mind the less than perfect autofocus then you probably won't need to pay for the premium. I personally would just rather pay for the best I can get so I don't have to worry about it later.

Having said all that, my next lens is definitely going to be Sigma's 35mm/1.2

It's got a 4x larger sensor size, which means that, all other things being equal, it can create images with the same noise levels at 4x higher ISO. So an image on full frame should be as noisy at ISO 400 as an image on M43 would be at ISO 100. It gives you 2 more f-stops or 4x shorter shutter speed to work with.

I like this camera, but it doesn't shoot RAW, and it has cucked me out of taking good photos in the past because it offers no shutter speed control and is stuck with automatic shutter speeds.

I'd rather shoot underexposed photos than properly exposed photos at 1/15th shutter speed with tons of blur...

What's a similar camera I'd like? Are there any good point and shoot cameras these days or have they all been phased out in favor of meme phones?

So, the Imaging Edge Mobile(formerly, PlayMemories App) for the A7m3 works fine for triggering the shutter, but I have an issues:
I couldn't find a way to focus the camera remotely. I've tried variations of just tapping the app shutter button or holding my finger on it to see if it would grab a focus point but it just takes the shot.
Is it possible at all to set the focus point using the application? It seems like a pain in the ass for shots of myself when shooting alone.

Following for interest. I used to make drafts and let them sit on my account for days/weeks until I was ready to post but then I ran into that error when it fails to upload with the message "Will auto post when connection improves". Ended up losing the drafts and had to set them up completely again. It depends on the kind of posing you're looking for. A lot good posing comes either from working with professional models or getting your model to relax. Often the first 5-10 minutes of a shoot with a non-professional model is just getting them to relax and become less aware of the camera.

In terms of successful poses having something in mind can help quite a bit. Rather than searching for pose have a few you want to try out. If you're following certain lighting rules than yes they can very helpful for getting light ratios to balance correctly. Light meters have fallen out of favor as a half way decent understanding of your camera's histogram and chimping the shots can get you most of the way there for getting the lights balanced. You can then brush up any imbalances in post.

If you're shooting any non-digital mediums than yes, you will 100% need a light meter. You will also need a newer light meter (1980s and newer?). The older and honestly kind of fun selenium meters won't be useful for getting a reading from a flash. The style you have pictured would be fine.

My Dad has a Canon PowerShot S95. It's got all the usual manual controls you'd want (aperture/shutter) plus raw. Good P&S really. It's pretty old now though. There might be a newer version with higher res/better video/etc

Is it possible to make photos like this picture with an APS-C? It was shot with a Canon EOS 6D. Always when I look through photos and I think "wow that looks great", it's the 6D or Sony A7II, etc.

I can see lots of great portraits, street photography of people, etc. with APS-C cams but never those beautiful city scapes. Am I wrong?

It's possible to create stunningly awesome photos with an APS-C camera. But it takes skill in shooting, framing, editing, etc. People who have that skill to create photos that truly wow you have been at it for a while and are serious about it. For those people, there is no reason to own an APS-C camera, they use full frame cause it gives them more to work with and its drawbacks (price, size) don't matter to them.

Nonsense. Lens speed is completely irrelevant here. These are long exposures. Up to f22 when going for light stars. What isnt is resolution. With ff you dont need to do panorama stiches. And you cant do panorama stitches on certain shots.

An entire copy of the image passes through every point of the aperture plane. If the aperture were behind the lens, it would cut off part of the image. But since all these different copies of the image from slightly different angles are spread out across the aperture plane, you're only reducing the number of unique angles that end up making their way to the sensor.

Think about how light is moving through the aperture and how it is limiting light coming into the camera. Light travels in straight line. Look at the attached image. They're pretty colorful and I'm assuming even Adobe RGB might not be wide enough.
The "Rainbow" marshmallow has a bright cyan, yellow and a pink.

The issue is that the dyes are fluorescent so accurate capture is less important than hand tweaking to the specific print system being used. It might also help to photograph them under UV light in a separate pass (I'd suggest two passes at 365 and 395nm with Wood's glass filters) to have a reference for pure fluorescence that can be blended with a visible light capture, assuming you're photographing them under static conditions.

Why do people complain about lack of sharpness when testing lenses at low apertures? It seems to me that it'd be mostly due to a shallow depth of field and the corners of the test grid being further away from the lens than the center is.

that's the point. when you build a lens the hard part is to transfer a 3d szenario to a 2d plane. if you would do nothing but a simple glass element you would get a picture with an acceptable center and soft, dark an distorted edges. the engineer tries to compensate these artefacts with other elements.

... you now, as long as you do not photograph hollow spheres from the inside, there is no realistic situation where you could need the sharpness point for the edges closer to the cam than for the center.

Choose what mode to shoot in based upon the scenario. There's no shame in using Program if the timing of a shot is critical. If your camera supports it, you can also bracket shutter/aperture so you have more flexibility later on.

I personally leave my camera in P when I'm carrying it around since, if I have the time to mess around with shutter and aperture, I certainly have the time to twist a dial.

That pisses me off though..countless times I watch/read reviews about lenses that shoot 1.2 or 1.4 and its the same thing where they advise you to just stop down to 2.8 or even f4....what's the fucking point? Newfriend who just got a DSLR for christmas here.
How do I prevent the lights from blowing out? Maybe I should expose for the star and then fix it up in posts, but I'm afraid of clipping my shadows this way.

Yes, expose for the star. Just try the minus exposure wheel in small increments to see what looks good.
If you really want both the tree and star evenly lit you could also do 2 shots, one where you exposed for tree then one for the star and merge the 2 pics.

Simple as pie. Btw your cam may also be able to auto bracket shots too

I don't know that camera but you might be able to recover enough shadow detail to get that shot. Try it and see what you can do. If not, you can do what other anons said and use a tripod and bracket (take a photo one stop under and one stop over).

I used to have the sigma 150-600, and it took some practice before i could handhold the lens and get sharp images, so you may just need to work on it. On the other hand, i do know that the Tamron G1 had issues with softness in a lot of copies, so you may want to do a controlled test to see if it’s you or the lens.

I colourize picture as a hobby does anyone else here? What would you guys rate this picture i just did the other day? In terms of realism etc? I am trying to get better, i was limited to an extent on what i could do due to the low resolution of the image plus the very deep contrasting shadows which make colouring hard. I tried to use a lot of new techniques i came up with in that picture as learning to colourize is pretty much 90% trial and error since there are essentially no intermediate or advanced colourization tutorials. I like to post on the r*ddit colourization but if you don't post pics that are WW2 WAR DOGGOS!!!! No one gives a fuck about your post even if it is a good picture. Sometimes the pictures i do can come out kind of too much of an artistic rendition rather than one aimed for realism like this picture i did awhile ago. But i still like this picture, and sometimes that is all you can do with a picture or what looks better.

I'm just going to keep doing timelapses and get better, it's comfy to me sit and just zone out listening to some good music working on a pic.

The operating system doesn't necessarily matter. If Lightroom works on Windows 7 (think it does, not sure if new versions require Windows 10 or not - find out) it should be fine. Performance on the other hand is all about hardware. For this you want a CPU with a few cores and good single-thread performance.

Look up the processor on CPUBenchmark.

For example here's the 8600K.

Go here and hit Control+F and type in the CPU the laptop has and see what it scores there, then click on it to see the page for the core count and stuff like the 8600K.

You want at the VERY LEAST to have around 2000 single thread and 8000 overall CPU Mark. Anything else, like 1200 single thread, is going to be cancer and not worth your time. Modern CPUs are nearing 3000 and this is more important than core count becuase not all filters will use more than one thread.

Post a soft/creamy pic?
D5600 should be able to take sharp photos with the stock lens. Wide apertures (1.8) will have what's called "bokeh" where the focal plane is narrow and everything that gets further from the focus area gets progressively blurrier and blurry. You could try tightening aperture to 2.8 or 4.0 to fit more in your "focused image range" to fit the whole subject in if you want.

Portraits from a distance look good do 50-200 might be nice but a pancake 35mm prime lens may be sharper in your budget.

Why do my photos change color when I change them to cmyk mode in photoshop, resize them, and export them? Why do the cmyk versions also look drastically different when I view them on other screens? Long exposure. There is a lot of light there though, so if you can't make the exposure long enough at smallest aperture and lowest iso you might need to invest in a neutral density filter.

I have the D5300 with 35mm and 50mm 1.8G, I always shoot with f 2.8 to get sharper images with a decent bokeh. I only shoot at 1.8 in low light.

The business model of Adobe CS, Windows/Office, and any similar pay-to-use software is that its users are fucking retarded and they make it so that a 90 IQ boomer who can't use technology can sort of figure out the UI.

watch a lot of youtube and read articles. they wont be as effective as books but if youre starting out they're more accessible. stay way from cheat sheets and stuff like that since it tends to kinda limit you. Start with auto mode on your camera and learn what settings the camera used. then switch to manual and start shooting until you feel like you're making progress

There's noise in your shot due to way too high iso and/or too long exposure times. You end up with much better results by taking several poper exposed shots in a good compromise between iso and exposure time to keep both rather low. Stacking the shots will average too and reduce noise.

I forgot, the attached exif shows the settings of a single shot.

If you plan to avoid trails, you need a shutter time of 500/(focal length) on full frame. The attached shot is a stack of several shots, where the stars where aligned with Sequator. Again stacking/averaging reduces noise.

Afaik dark frame subtraction reduces static noise/permanent misreadings of each pixel. You would still end up with dynamic noise from energization and heating which can be addressed with averaging.

This is spot on. A local photographer comes to mind who primarily uses a 5DIII and has a waiting list for clients. All things being equal, the latest and the greatest versus a generation or two old will usually only give you marginal return on quality/performance, if at all.

Yes. Sorry, I've been hanging around /ic/. You can make it in photography.

Honestly, age of the camera isn't going to matter much if buying within the past decade. The biggest changes to each generation are better AF and less noise at higher ISOs. My favorite camera is still the Canon 6D. My company has one, and I get really beautiful photos with it. In a lot of ways, the 6D with a 24-105 surpasses my Sony a7iii and GM glass. I love the colors, and the RAWs are easy to edit in Lightroom. I get great results from still life and slow-moving subjects.

All of this isn't to say I regret shooting Sony. The a7iii is a GREAT all-around camera. I shoot everything from studio portraits to football. The AF is phenomenal, and the ISO can be pushed pretty high without penalty to IQ. My advice to anyone who has read this far is to switch to Capture One if you shoot Sony. It handles ARW files way better than Lightroom/Camera Raw.

Still, I find the 6D such a pleasure to use, and the photos I get are really great. There are a ton of used ones available, and EF glass is pretty ubiquitous.

Pornhub has a photos feature if you sign up for an account. Add some tags so people can find you in search, comment on some videos of similar subject matter to people of you & your wife's description, add your photos to an album or multiple albums, and you will get views. Granted, it's not gonna be an artsy photography crowd, but the viewers will be interested in the material at least.

Film is like putting your digital camera on one white balance setting that isn't auto. There are films designed for daylight and films designed for incandescent light. If you want to adjust white balance to something other than your film's color, you have to use a color filter. Film can also show colors differently if you over- or underexpose it, but that's a tricky thing to get right.

So a digital camera with auto white balance acts like a film camera that automatically creates a custom color filter to adjust for each shot. If you want to shoot digital the way most films work normally, just put your camera's white balance to daylight setting and leave it there.

I've organised chaos.
Folders by months. XMP tags used for keywording, ratings, and colour tags, so files are synchronised across different programs. When I dump images to comp, I quickly go through them to rate what could be keepers. Then yellow colour for panorama stacks, blue for focus stacks, red for to be deleted. That part is done in capture one or photo mechanic. Then I open lightroom and dump everything into main catalogue. And when I have time, I keyword everything eventually. Event, theme, broad subject matter, names for flora and fauna... That's the most time intensive process, but it does pay up later when doing shit. I'd replace lightroom with something that would be just used to organise files, I only use it's cataloguing system. When editing something, it's back to capture one/rawtherape/affinityphoto, but I know of nothing that can handle 70k files without hiccups.

They do when shooting into light sources. Have a really scratched polarizing filter, and I'm getting really silly results with it. On other hand, it's hardly effecting image in regular situations. I'd say that fixing lens scratches is a bit pointless, even if you'd fix them, results could be worse, since you could remove coating doing it. You could increase selling price, though.

Plus, clients who want prints often prefer 8x10 or square, so these ratios cover that.

My system is not very elaborate. I just copy the folder from the memory card and leave that default name it has, but after working on the images in LR, I'll export twice and give a name of whatever I shot ex:
"Weekend getaway mobile" (reduced resolutions kept for social media posting)
"Weekend getaway hq" (with the high res versions I keep for possible printing in the future.
One problem I ran into was ocassionally having to sort some folders for the same day where I end up having 2 folders because the file number system stops at DSC_9999 then I had to manually rename the others to start from 10000 10001 etc
Total pain in ass.

The hands look fine to me but those face highlights are a bit too bright and look somewhat like a bad case of vitiligo. I know adjusting the highlights and the shadowed areas to balance out well in the face can be difficult but overall it's a good start.

2 stops shallower depth of field compared to 35mm. You get background separation at f/16 and they're unruly by f/4. Headshots with a standard lens can yield bokeh balls bigger than the subjects head. Only on medium format though. Bokeh patterns vary by lens but most ILC system lenses are professional grade and vary between "pleasing but unobtrusive" and "clinical". I wouldn't bother to convert.

It is uv filter, and it's still just a conjecture at this point about it. People figured that some pana lenses exhibit more fringing on oly bodies, so they came up with an explanation that it's down to weaker uv filter on sensor stack. That then watered down to no uv filter at all on olympus bodies, on some less intelligent review sites. uv filter on olympus lenses coating, and other such nonsense. What is true about it, is that olympus bodies do perform really well with speed boosters for some reason, and that you can fix fringing of those pana lenses with uv filter. It's not much of a concern, all new pana lenses seams to be without this problem on oly bodies.

Digital cameras have uv stacks on sensors, so they're mainly for lens protection. Good ones don't degrade quality. Though there are pixelpeepers that will tell you that they see difference, nobody has ever been able to provide a single sample for it.

Does anyone actually use this thing? I can't figure it out. I downloaded the corresponding software(fuji in this case) and it keeps putting me through the registration process to find the pc. I think I'll just stick to taking out the sd card every time I want to transfer files.

I bought a second hand D7000, and I decided to clean the sensor because the dirt was very obvious on apertures smaller than f/5.6. I saw scratches on the sensor surface when I opened it up. Here's a test shot of the sky after cleaning it, shot at f/11. Now I can't tell if the lens also affects the image, because my 50mm f/1.8D has some traces of fungi in them. Is this acceptable?

Seriously though, I've been looking at the following print services: Instaprint, Solopress, Ro-Am Posters, Vistaprint, helloprint.co.uk, digitalprinting.co.uk and pixel2print.co.uk - getting quotes for 100 posters.

helloprint.co.uk charge a worryingly-low £26.98 for 100 A2 (they don't offer A1), while Vistaprint want £711.48 for 100 A1 so I'll probably leave those, but does anyone have experience with any of these services?

Instaprint and pixel2print are both in the mid-£300s range so it's probably a toss-up between those two, but any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

I've been learning how to edit with darktable + GIMP, but wanted to try photoshop. Some anon shared a cracked version of ps 20.0.1, but I havn't found a good download of lightroom, and I'm reading that ccmaker doesn't work with lightroom, or that there are no cracked versions of cc/classic cc. I'm also not really seeing any evidence that lightroom is even necassary, if ps already has a raw editor? Also, would a darktable+photoshop workflow make sense?

It seems like everybody just uses lightroom and photoshop, but I don't know if that's just because most people are using creative cloud and it's easier to stay with adobe

Poorfag here. I have a Nikon 7000 and I wonder if looking into old analog lens + adapter ring is a good idea for making more creative pictures without spending too much money. I don't care about lens flare and dust (it can be a advantage for me), I just want to make sure that my images stay sharp.
If you have good old analog brand/reference to recommend me, I would appreciate it. For the moment I m looking for a 35mm prime lens.

High iso is fine.You can easily go to 1000 with barely any grain these days. And you can always clean it in post. If anything, its easier to fix something you shot at high iso, than it is to fix a blurry photo at low shutter speed, or out of focus low fstop.

add some noise, make sure every channel gets some.
save as jpg, compress it some

open new file crop it all around by an ammount not dividable by 8, add some more noise

resize it by quite a lot /3 or smaler dont use any fancy algos for that

export it to pcx or something else you can open yourself with a hex editor to make sure no metadata is added.

congratulations you have now a clean file you can not print nor share any other way without traces, also the os/software you used to make the file may have indexed/left other traces....
this is just a rabit hole you dont want to enter.

tldr dont document/share your crimes else you are fucked
