sometimes its actually much better. for some reason the nikon d80 doesn't support auto iso outside of full auto

There's a time and place for it. It's good for when you're using a flash unit on the camera and you don't want to fuck around with the exposure settings that change drastically based on how far away the subject is.

Auto mode should be the default mode you set on your camera. If you only have a second to take a shot, it gives you the best chance to expose it correctly. If you have more time to fuck around with aperture, shutter speed and ISO, you also have the time to set a different mode on your camera.
