how am I supposed to do bird photography with this retarded lens? i try to take a picture and it focuses on the wrong thing (after taking the half century to focus to begin with) and then the picture just comes out like shit. should I return this? it was $1100

That's a consumer lens, my dude. You'd want the 70-200 f/4 for $1400 or the $2600 70-200 f/2.8. You could try the 200-600 that just came out a few months ago, but it has middling reviews at best, which is not what you want in a $2000 lens.

you aint shoot serious stuff with 70-300 sony kit lens which is nonsense in it's price but there is the rules of the game. you jumped new lens mount you pay 10x more for same lens quality thats how industry moved for a century

if you need cheap telephoto so much i'd prefer z6/eosr with adapter even though i drown in sony ecosystem cahep telephoto is not the point where sony is in power now at all i mean not at all

The lens isn`t usualy the issue, its the autofocus.
To get fast autofocus, you need to use phase change autofocus instead of contrast autofocus.
In addition to that it is good practice to use a single AF field that you point onto the subject to get focus.

i knew the rules before playing so when i bought a7 in 2016 i just add 55 1.8 sony zeiss for it and till this day that's my only sony native lens. manual lenses from ebat cost 10x less for same IQ, but i'm pretty happy. that's the rules of the game. you either in or either not

do some AF adjustments on your AF Menu. Try a faster following AF tracking, also tune your lens as your needs to avoid wrong focus.

1/640 or higher to get a good image, lower the ISO the better.

also be patient about birding. use a crop area mode to get more reach if your camera have it. I really don't know if Sony has that mode

Dot bother. You won't get much better quality with slightly longer reach. Buy at least 200-600 with teleconverter, if you're willing to go tripod and heavy. Or you just buy a second m43 body and panaleica 100-400. For auto focus you could probably get away with em5iii. To be safe, g9 or em1ii.

Anyway, before you're fed up with it and return it, try as strong teleconverter as sony has for that lens. 100-400 is usually sports range, for birding you need at least 600mm, that's why I advised those m43's.

Maybe understand how to autofocus works and when take photos of wildlife?

1. The birds are dark / black and lack contrast for AF to work properly on any system.
2. You where shooting at Midday over water... NO... light is hard and shit.
3. You are not close enough to subjects
4.Im assuming you are shooting sRGB and not just saved as sRGB.. why? (Disregard if you exported as sRGB)
5. Shutter speed way to low.
6. Try more photos at different combinations to understand what the sweet spot is for your set up.

The lens just sucks get over it dude. You can’t even record video with it it’s a fly by wire manual focus which is set based on the rotational speed of the ring not any actual set parameter. The whole thing is a failure of a lens made for retards
