Thinkin about picking up a Yashica T4... yeah yeah I know these bitches are deathly overpriced but my Stylus Epic is dying and I wanna try something new. Haven't had any luck in thrift stores. Y'all recommend? Where do you buy your cameras? FB Marketplace?

Honestly I've had good luck with eBay. All the point and shoots I've seen on Craigslist, Offerup, Mercari, etc are stupidly overpriced. I bought 2 Olympus XA3s on eBay for $45 a piece when usually they sell close to $100. Just be patient and stalk the newer listing for a while

There's only a small handful of film Po/S cameras that have attained cult status and meme prices. Stay away from those and buy literally anything else.

This. My mum gave my her old Yashica Minitec Super, it's functionally the same as a T4 but without the hipster tax. Great camera but would never pay T4 prices for it, especially considering it could brick at any moment.

I have one and it’s the best p&s I have, although it rewinds about every third roll when you’re only halfway done. Also have a T5 which I feel performs slightly worse, might be since it’s very beat up so perhaps the lens alignment is slightly off or something.

I got both -very- cheap though. I’d happily keep shooting my Mju I if I didn’t find these. I’d say the Yashicas aren’t worth the asking price, maybe ~€150 max but not much more than that. The lens is great but that’s about it.

This. A $50 Nikon FG with a pancake 50 that fits in your coat pocket will take a giant shit all over any point and shoot money can buy. I made a Soviet contraption using a FED5, 15mm f4.5 Voigtlander and the finder for it and it fits in a coat pocket if you pop the finder off. And the 15 you can zone focus which is what I do and that whole thing still costs less than a T4

I have one, it’s not really that great imo, considering selling mine. The corners are super soft and the autofocus is really hit & miss honestly. I also don’t really like how it handles film, the way it goes upside down and the wrong way messes me up when scanning and in the darkroom, although I guess it’s the same for the GR’s too. The size is great though.

Not saying it’s a bad camera or anything, just that I prefer others. I’ve heard the motor on them can break really easily too, mine still works without any issues luckily.

That too, an f/6.5 in the long end (or slower) is pretty useless indoors with film.

But also, small zoom lenses are crap (distortion and sharpness - though sharpness is overrated), and they provide yet another point of failure, the electric motors that zoom the lens in and out.

That said, if you find a really cheap one, try it out, why not.
Some of the fixed lens ones had their prices memed to oblivion.

Yep. P&S zooms are slow and shitty. In general, since they’re optically simpler, it’s easier and cheaper to make a faster, higher quality prime.

I find all of mine at thrift stores. Rarely pay more than $8 for any unless I find something notable. Takes persistence. I might see nothing but IQ Zooms for weeks, then boom. Both of those Nikons show up at the same time. I also find a shit ton of Stylus Epic Zoom 80s for some reason.

Found the Nishika yesterday. New in box. I was about to pass it up since it was $15, but then I looked at eBay.

I got one good camera in a Goodwill, one of those AF600s and I lost it.

Ok guys, question for y'all:

Should I get a Olympus Infinity Stylus or Ricoh r1? I've used the stylus epic for years and it's shitting out on me right now due to the beatings I have given it. I saw someone recommending the r1 above and it looks cool, though I'm not sure if it's very good. There's not much information that I can find about it. On the other hand, the MJU 1 is a nice reliable camera that I've used before. Obviously this is a one sided question, but I'm interested in whether or not I should take the safe route, or go for something new.

All electronic point and shoots are prone to breaking, may as well get a boxed mint one if you're even considering purchasing a point and shoot.

Ya, the LCDs die...but all you miss out on is the frame counter. Mine has been intermittent for a year (sometimes it's perfect, sometimes barely anything shows up) and it doesn't bother me or affect my shooting at all.

Except components like capicitors and LCDs die due to age and not due to use. Buying a mint 30 year old camera can still result in dead LCDs and flashes (and with some cameras a dead flash = a dead camera).

I'm the person recommending the camera earlier in this thread. I also want to add it's been in my pocket everyday while I worked construction for the past 6 months. It's been getting an absolute beating and shows no sign of stopping electronically or mechanically.

There's also the Minox GL/EL/similar cameras, if you can live without autofocus. They are just wonderful little things in terms of build quality, and feel amazing to use. They also have the benefit of being manually winded with more or less completely silent shutters, so very stealthy.

Olympus XA (original one) can be had for very cheap, aperture priority with an actual functional rangefinder, and quiet shutter.

Cosina CX-1/2 are also really fun little cameras, results similar to the Lomo LC-A but with actual functional mechanics and non-lomo prices.
