I've got an old Zenit-E wich is low-tech by 1960s standard, but still worls flawlessly.
It takes decent pictures and the build in light-meter is ok as long as it doesn't get too dark.
I did start photography with that, but fast shooting was just not an option with it.
In my family we also have an old pre-war boxcam wich I guess still works, but these thi gs are notorious for their shitty image quality, shitty viewfinders and inability to work outside direct sunlight.

At best you get a build-in light meter and build in conversion for ISO, aperture and exposure time.
