And if you think boats are expensive, try getting into planes and amateur piloting.
On the other hand, the existence of a more expensive hobby does not make photography LESS expensive for you personally. It might put things into perspective, somewhat, but a $2500 lens is still $2450 more than what you can spend. As a quick aside, photography sales can be full of scams because of this, so if a deal seems too good to be true and you don’t know the vendor? It’s probably a scam. Everyone will usually charge within fifty bucks of everyone else on the same item.
As someone else noted, photography doesn’t HAVE to be expensive. You can pick up a decent used digital body and a good prime lens and be set for a very long time for an investment of maybe $400. I think it’s a good idea for new photographers to limit themselves, at least at first, to single lens until they learn to “see” with it. The temptation is too great to constantly change your lens and then be salty when you don’t own the “right” one, which leads to gearfagging (that’s an internal phrase, don’t use outside of /p/), which is never ever good. I knew a guy, local guy, who shot all of his stuff on a D40 and a 50 1.8 with available light only. He had 50k Instagram followers before he bought a new camera.
So I dunno. I dunno who I’m even writing this to. I guess the guys who wander in looking for discussion. I don’t think the op was serious and/or will come back. Regardless, photography doesn’t have to be expensive, and if you think it is, be glad you don’t want a sailboat.
