leica iiic lenses

what lenses can i mount or adapt onto a Leica IIIc (M39 mount) while retaining its rangefinder ability?

I'd like to use fast (2.8 or faster) and/or sharp 35mm 50mm 85mm primes on it.

googling & reading up on this at the same time as i make this post...

Any ltm Voigtländer, or Soviet lens. The latter are optically ok, but their build quality is subpar compared to any of the aforementioned. They're easy to service, though. The Voigtländer lenses offer best price/quality ratio.
Note that for everything wider than 50mm you need an external finder to frame accurately.
Here's an example with the Summicron 50/2 (DR version for M-mount) wide open on Foma 400.

The Voigtlander 35mm 2.5 LTM is deadly sharp but lacks character.

The Color Skopar 35/2.5 has plenty of character. You won't really notice a lens' character if you don't use it wide open. Here's an example.

that just looks like shallow DoF

it's a clinical lens. its super sharp, rarely if ever flares, and is pretty faultless. but it also doesn't have any character. it doesn't have any special rendering qualities like other lenses may exhibit and people seek out.

i'm not saying it's a bad lens at all...just it doesn't give you anything beyond sharp images with nice contrast.

He means the lens is clinical = free of characterstics unique to it. 'Character' might be the 'glow' of uncoated, or single coated lenses (abberations), the swirly bokeh of some of the Helios-44 models (not well corrected), or similar 'flaws'. Some like them, some don't.
If you're looking for a lens faster than f/2-2.5, the best compromise of all factors is probably the Voigtländer Nokton 50/1.5.

Possibly, I mistake these here. I like the transition from focus to oof areas, but it's similar to that of the Biogon 35/2, which is said to be a clinical lens as well. So, I guess you're right.

I'd say the Voigtlander 40 1.4 is an even better value. They sell for <$250 on eBay when they come up for bidding.

Is it available in ltm? I'm talking about OP's initial question here in regards to lenses for a IIIC, which has a 50mm viewfinder only. Any 40mm is only suitable for M6 and above (sloppy framelines) and the 35/1.4 Noktons suffer from major barrel distortion. I happily double the price and sacrifice a stop for a sharper and better corrected lens as the Biogon. Usually, I don't shoot wide open, but work with filters and push to compensate anyway.
